The Secret Garden

The Secret Garden Art Education, Art Therapy & Creativity Development for children and adults. Each month children work around a theme or a current event.

'The Secret Garden' opened on the 1st of October 2009, specializes in Art Education, creativity development and art Therapy for children, teenagers and adults.

■Syllabus and teaching methods:
The Secret Garden syllabus is researched, formulated and taught by Art Educationalist, early childhood educator and art therapy practitioner, Priscilla Caren Anandappa. Children are encouraged to use free expression and develop their own sense of style. They are taught how to use & care for art materials, and how to use different mediums. Working in a safe, child friendly and cohesive environment helps children develop their social skills, vocabulary and confidence. By working on creative projects, they learn sequencing, patience, how to solve problems in a unique, unbiased and expressive way. They learn the importance of paying attention to detail and have the satisfaction of knowing they have completed a task by themselves. Children are taught the history of art, biographies of famous artists, nature related topics and they have the opportunity to experiment with varied artistic media and artistic tools. Exhibitions are held each year to showcase their work and give to the community. Classes:
■Elementary class:
This class is for children aged 3 to 7 years. Classes are conducted on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 3 to 4pm.
■Regular class:
This class is for children 7 and above. Classes are on week days from 4.30 to 6 pm. & on Saturday from 9 to 10.30am and 11am-12.30pm.
■Teenage Class
■Adult class : Conducted via Zoom on Monday mornings and on Poya day mornings. These details may change due to the present situation.

Who stole the Monalisa?
This week we learned about a famous art heist by Vincenzo Perrugia. Children were taught about Leonardo da Vinci and we explored facts about the artist and painting.
Let the games begin.
Children had to find clues, crack codes, solve puzzles and use a compass to locate the hidden Monalisa painting, after which, they had to forge it!
We had a great week and children asked if they could do it again next week. The cat that visits the class is now called 'Mona-poosa'.

For this special project, children were given the freedom to paint whatever they liked—no rules, no set subject, just their imagination taking the lead!
It’s wonderful to see how each young artist chose to express themselves through colour, creativity and their own unique ideas.

Who was Henri Matisse?
Learning about Henri Matisse, a modern artist celebrated for his bold use of colour, Fauvism, abstract expressionism and collage.
Inspired by Matisse, the children were encouraged to let their imaginations lead the way—experimenting freely with different art mediums, shapes, colours and textures.
A wonderful lesson in creative freedom, self-expression and exploration!

Collage with Our Favourite Mug!
Have you ever realised that we often develop a special bond with the mug we use every morning? A hot cup of tea, coffee, milk, or hot chocolate can bring a sleepy morning to life. It makes the transition from grogginess to alertness a little more pleasant, offering us a sense of comfort, warmth, and bliss.
The children shared stories about their morning routines revolving around their favourite mugs—sometimes quiet and peaceful, sometimes rushed, and quite often wonderfully chaotic!
Through this collage activity, they explored the memories, emotions, and little moments connected to something as simple and familiar as a favourite mug.
