Sri Lanka records the longest sensory wall for Autism Awareness, encouraging inclusion, collaboration and community across the island. A special note of appreciation to Merak and The Tree House International who initiated and spearheaded the project.
The Secret Garden was glad to be a small part of this national intiative, that secured a place in the Guiness Book of World Records. Needless to say, the children were thrilled!
For our lesson, the children were made aware of ASD. We had meaningful discussions about respect, bullying, being ostracised, feelings/insecurities, inclusion and experiences of being differently abled.
We set off to work during the week, using various interesting materials, and trying desparately to ensure everything is held in place with our glue gun, glue, double sided tape and super glue!

So proud to have been part of this historical event!
Sensory boards by The Secret Garden and their inspiration/relevance:
1. Music - This board was inspired by sound. It has a traditional drum,a drumstick, a horn, a cd, a squshy toy with a disco light and a shaker with bells. We incorporated textures that evoke multiple tactile experiences and chose a variety of materials which we cut into musical notes as well as basic shapes to add visual interest and a tactile experience. Children used Acrylic paint, working collaboratively to paint the piano, while using brushe stokes that depict rhythm & movement.
2. Ocean board - This board was absolutely fun to create, as we used rocks, shells, thread, sand, sea glass, fabric and paint to create an abstract version of a seascape. Being an island nation, this board has many familiar elements which children can identify with and explore.
3. Modernism - This board is inspired by the famous modern artist Piet Mondrian. It has a intractive puzzle right in the center and geometric shapes of various textured matetials surrounding it for an interesting sensory experience. We used foam, sandpaper, reflective stickers, felt and textured foam in Primary Colours.
4. Street inspired board - This board has abstact vehicles painted on it with movable wheels and black glitter textured roads. It also provides colourful tubes for building horozontally and vertically which help chidren develop spatial awareness and fine motor skills. We attached a whistle which children could blow and a fidget spinner.
5. Multy Sensory board- This board provides various sensory experiences because of the materials used - pipecleaners, painted bubblewrap, foam, mirrors, rubber tubes, metal flower cutouts, light bulb, foam, rotatable mini fans, colourful zips and paint.
6. Tea Estate - This board is an abstract board that depicts the tea estates in the hills. The hills are made up of fabric, felt, wool, foam and thread in various values of green. The movable beads and bells were an inspiration from the tea pluckers and mimic the movement through the plantation. The sky has clouds (pompoms) and pale blue pipecleaners which are movable, depict the wind.
7. Nature - This board represent items that are found in the natural world and provide varied sensations for touch and feel. We used seeds, coconut husks, grass, fur, bamboo, wood and feathers that provide interesting and contrasting tactile sesnsations when juxtapositioned intentionally.
8. Industrial board - This board is ideal for children whose proclivity is towards object based stimming. It has locks, latches, zips, movable cogs, electrical switches, chains, a funnel/tube that you can pass marbles through and movable magnets.
9. Glitter and Glamour board - This board was primarily put together by the girls. They used pipe cleaners, pink glitter foam, beads that travel through a transparent ring, mirrors, rubber balls, paint and pompoms.

TSG reopened today after a short break. Have a look at our cosy reading corner/library. There are lots of books which children borrow each week, puzzles, jigsaws, games and activities to enjoy if they need a break. Dinosaurs have their special place too!

Painting wooden door/wall hangings. Some are personalised, some are words of encouragement, some are gifts and others are just for fun. Do read through.
We also made Venn diagrams that compared and contrasted Gustav Klimt's paintings of 'Adele Bloch Bauer' and 'The woman with a fan'. The children were able to observe and discuss many aspects of the paintings while discovering finer/less obvious details at first glance.
