The Esala Poya is in the month of Esala according to the Sinhala calendar and the Gregorian calendar in which we use it as July.
Several important things happened on the Esala Poya or Esala Full Moon day.

The conception of Prince Siddhartha (Bodhisattva) in Queen Mahamaya Deviโ€™s womb occurred on this day.

Prince, Siddhartha and Princess Yasodharaโ€™s son, Prince Rahula was born on an Esala Poya day.On this same day Prince Siddhartha gave up his lay life, donned the robes of an ascetic and went in search of Enlightenment or Buddhahood as he became disillusioned with lay life after encountering an old man, a sick man and a co**se. He realised everyone including himself a prince must go through old age, sickness and death. His final encounter was with a sadhu and he thought of becoming an ascetic or sadhu and finding the truth was the way out of Samsara (life).

Prince Siddharthaโ€™s giving up of lay life is known as the Great Renunciation. In preparation to leave the palace he quietly went and saw his son Prince Rahula, born that day and Princess Yasodhara, his wife, both of whom were fast asleep. Then he mounted his horse Kantaka and with his trusted Minister left the Palace and his life as a Prince forever. When they came to the banks of the river Neranjana, Prince Siddhartha dismounted. He cut off his hair with his sword, took off his royal garments and donned the yellow robes of an ascetic. He gave his clothes to weeping Channa and bade him go back to the Palace and break the news of his Renunciation. The horse Kantaka watched his beloved master walk away and died of a broken heart.

After achieving Buddhahood the Buddha preached his first sermon, the Dammachakka pavattana Sutta to five ascetics, on an Esala Poya day at the Deer Park in Isipatana (present Saranath) in India. They were with him for sometime during his search for the truth.

Their names were Kondanna, Bhaddiya, Vappa, Mahanama and Assaji. At the end of the sermon the ascetics embraced Buddhism and became the first theras in the Sasana. The ascetic Kondanna attained the state of Sotapatti. Many Devas and Brahmas also listened to this first sermon.

It was on Esala Poya that the Buddha visited the Tauvthisa Dev Lova, (Tauvtisa abode of the Gods) and for the first time preached the Abidhamma to the Maathru Divya Rajaya (who was Mahamaya Devi in her previous birth) and the other Gods there.

The Buddha performed the Yamaka Maha Prathiharya or the Twin Miracles on an Esala Poya Day to show that He was the Buddha to the proud, older Sakya clansmen. He rose into the air and walked over and he made flames come out of the upper part of his body and water from the lower part.

Then he reversed the process. Then, the Buddha made fire come out of the right side of his body and water from the left side of his body. He also emitted six resplendent rays of light from his body.

Wishing everyone a blessed poya day ๐Ÿ™

Happy Poson Poya Day! This is an important day that marks the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Here is a more detailed description of Poson Poya Day:

Poson Full-Moon Poya Day is celebrated to mark the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC, a festival of great historical and religious significance celebrated island-wide by Buddhists. Poson, held on the full moon day of June, commemorates the occasion over 2,000 years ago when Arahat Mahinda, son of Emperor Asoka of India, converted King Devanampiyatissa to Buddhism.

The main centre of celebration is Mihintale, the ancient monastic complex where the royal missionary monk Mahinda preached the first sermon to the ruling king and at Anuradhapura the ancient capital, to which large crowds of pilgrims converge. Mass religious observances, illuminations and pageants are part of the celebrations.

For Buddhists, this hallowed day of Poson is second only to Vesak in terms of importance. Although Poson is celebrated throughout the island, the major ceremonies are to be found in Anuradhapura and Mihintale. Long lines of devotees dressed in white climb the many steps to the top of the Mihintale hill first to the temple, and then to the dagobas that adorn the nearby hillocks. In addition, many devotees climb to the very top of the rock, to the spot where Arahat Mahinda delivered his initial discourses.

Poson Poya is celebrated annually with great fervour throughout the island but particularly in Mihinthale where Mahinda Thera first put his foot to preach the word of The Buddha. This is why Mihinthale is called the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. With the establishment of the Bhikkhu Sasanaya all other elements of a civilised society began to emerge with the art of writing, art, architecture, river civilization, religious rituals in song and dance forms and literature, all with royal patronage.

Many religious activities are organised during this poson period in Sri Lanka such as Sil campaigns, Bodhi Poojas, Dansalas, Poson devotional songs, Poson pandols (thoran) and lanterns. On Poson Poya Day many temples are filled with Atasil devotees and pilgrims all over Sri Lanka. The devout, clad in pure white make their way to the temple, to spend the next twenty-four hours in quiet contemplation.

My love for the people of Sri Lanka and their amazing preservation of the Dhamma for over 2,000 years will never cease.

Letโ€™s all use this day to strengthen our practice, observe 8 precepts (if we are lay people), and develop the virtues of sila (morality), samadhi (concentration), and paรฑรฑa (wisdom).

Have a blessed full moon day! ๐Ÿ™

Today is Nikini Full Moon Poya day.
Nikini Poya is celebrated to mark four important occurences in Buddhist History.
The most significant event pertaining to Nikini Full Moon Poya day was the first Dhamma Sangayana (Sangha Council) held three months after the Buddha โ€˜Parinibbanaโ€™.
The senior disciples of the Blessed One felt a need to enforce certain principles and rules to protect the Buddhist cannon. It was presided over by Mahakassapa Thero. The Dhamma Sangayana commenced with 499 bhikkhus, with Ananda Maha Thero, who became an Arahant on the eve of the event, taking the total congregation to 500.

The immediate cause for conducting the first Dhamma Sangayana was the misbehaviour of a monk by the name of Subaddha after Parinibbana of the Enlightened One. All ordinary bhikkhus who had not attained Arahantship excepting monk Subaddha lamented over the Parinibbana of the Buddha. Monk Subaddha had become an ascetic during his old age not actually to practice it but because he had no other way of living. He had requested the monks not to mourn but to be happy as there was no one after Buddha to give them orders.

Arahants led by Maha Kassapa Thera felt that the behaviour of ascetic Subaddha was an indication of problems among members of the Sangha community and on Esala Full Moon Poya Day, two months after the Parinibbana of the Buddha, decided to hold the Sangha Council to settle the Buddhist cannon. The first Sangha Council was held in Saptapanni cave at Rajagahanuwara, under the patronage of Arahant Maha Kassapa and the royal patronage was provided by King Ajasatta. Five hundred Arahants participated in the Sangha Council which went on for seven months. Dhamma Pitake and Vinaya Pitake were classified into Digha Nikaya, Majjima Nikaya, Sanyutta Nikaya, Anguttara Nikaya and Kuddaka Nikaya.

They were learnt by heart. The responsibility for each part was entrusted to leading Theros. Arahant Ananda Maha Thera and his followers were entrusted with the responsibility for Digha Nikaya. The followers of Arahant Sariputta Maha Thera were entrusted with the Majjima Nikaya. Sanyutta Nikaya was entrusted with Arahant Kassapa Maha Thera and his followers. Anguttara Nikaya was the responsibility of Arahant Anuruddha Maha Thera and his followers. All the Theras were made responsible for the Kuddaka Nikaya. Vinaya Pitake was entrusted with Arahant Upali Maha Thera. The introduction to Dhamma Sangati, Vibhanga Dhatukata, Puggala Pragnappti and Yamaka Pattan of Abhidharma were also rehearsed here.

The secomd important event was the attainment of Arahanthship by the Buddhaโ€™s chief disciple, Ananda Maha Thero. Ananda Maha Thera had gained eminence in erudition and possessed a lot of knowledge in Dhamma. He was โ€˜Dhamma Bhandagarikaโ€™ - treasurer of Dhamma having heard all the discourses of the Buddha. He was second only to Buddha in intelligence, good sense, prudence and circumspection. He had reached the apex in understanding and apprehension. In serving as โ€˜Agra Upasthayakeโ€™ Buddhaโ€™s chief attendant, he did everything possible for the safety and comfort of the Buddha.

Commencement Pasu Vas by Nuddhist monks who had not commenced Vas on Esala Poyaday begins on Nikini Poyaday.
The Final Randoli Perahara of the Annual Kandy Esala Maha Perahara parade the streets of Kandy today on Nikini Poyaday. The Kandy Esala festival ends with a Day Perahera today.

โ–ช๏ธSignificance of Esala poya day

The Esala Poya is in the month of Esala according to the Sinhala calendar and the Gregorian calendar in which we use it as July.
Several important things happened on the Esala Poya or Esala Full Moon day.

The conception of Prince Siddhartha (Bodhisattva) in Queen Mahamaya Deviโ€™s womb occurred on this day.

Prince, Siddhartha and Princess Yasodharaโ€™s son, Prince Rahula was born on an Esala Poya day
On this same day Prince Siddhartha gave up his lay life, donned the robes of an ascetic and went in search of Enlightenment or Buddhahood as he became disillusioned with lay life after encountering an old man, a sick man and a co**se.

After achieving Buddhahood the Buddha preached his first sermon, the Dammachakkapavattana Sutta to five ascetics, on an Esala Poya day at the Deer Park in Isipatana (present Saranath) in India.
