"Systematic Review: From Research Question to Publishable Evidence"

Synopsis: Systematic reviews have become an increasingly important method for synthesising evidence across growing and often fragmented bodies of research. Yet, despite their widespread use, many systematic reviews fall short of the methodological rigour and transparency expected by leading journals. This session provides a practical introduction to systematic reviews for postgraduate researchers interested in undertaking evidence synthesis as part of their research. The discussion will explore what a systematic review is, how it differs from other review approaches, when it is the most appropriate method to use, and the types of research questions it can address. It will also outline the key stages involved in planning and conducting a systematic review, from developing a research question and search strategy through to screening, analysis, and reporting. Drawing on practical research experience, the session will highlight common methodological, analytical, and reporting challenges, as well as the mistakes that frequently undermine the quality, credibility, and publishability of systematic reviews. Participants will gain practical insights into how to design and deliver a robust review that makes a meaningful contribution to research and practice.

Synopsis:
Fundamental research plays a critical role in advancing science, technology, and innovation by addressing foundational questions that shape future discoveries and real-world applications. In this Research Lounge, the speaker will draw from her research experience in robotics and embodied intelligence at University of Cambridge to discuss how fundamental research is conducted in practice, from identifying meaningful research questions to building collaborations and navigating interdisciplinary work. The session will also reflect on the process of producing high-impact research of the kind often published in journals such as Nature and Science, including the importance of originality, rigor, and long-term scientific vision.

The speaker will also share her academic journey from completing her PhD at University of Moratuwa to pursuing postdoctoral research opportunities abroad. The discussion will further explore research culture, long-term thinking in academia, and pathways for Sri Lankan students and early-career researchers interested in pursuing advanced research opportunities locally and abroad.
