July 4, 1776 | Adoption of the Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence, adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, is one of the most beautiful and important political documents in history. Written primarily by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration not only proclaimed American independence from Great Britain, it also enshrined Americans’ natural rights as the cornerstone of our republic. “We hold these truths to be self-evident,” Jefferson masterfully wrote, “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

April 19, 1775 | Lexington and Concord

Tensions boiled over, and the first shots of the American Revolution were fired - later called the “shot heard ’round the world.”

At Lexington, 8 Americans were killed. Later at Concord, 400 colonists confronted British troops, killing 49 and forcing them to retreat. The war had begun.

Where tradition meets innovation - and youth make the connection stronger 🌏✨

American Corner Matara hosted “Avurudu Meets America”, a vibrant Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration 🎉

From traditional Avurudu games and cultural customs to digital games, American-inspired interactive activities, music, and fun challenges - the day was a joyful blend of cultures, energy, and creativity 💫

Beyond celebration, it became a space to connect, learn, and reflect on shared values of unity, community, and togetherness 🤝

April 18, 1775 | Paul Revere’s Ride

When British troops planned a surprise attack, Paul Revere, a Boston silversmith and committed patriot who was a member of The Sons of Liberty, rode more than twelve miles through the night to warn colonial fighters.

His warning helped local militias prepare - turning secrecy into resistance. While several riders played roles that night, Paul Revere’s swift warning and legendary ride became a symbol of American resistance and helped spark the first battles of the Revolutionary War.

American Corner Matara will be closed from April 12-17, 2026 in honor of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
We will resume regular operations and programs starting April 18, 2026.

As part of the "Countdown to Freedom 250" monthly program series, American Corner Matara hosted “Voices of Revolution: Founding Documents and Ideals.”

Participants explored the foundational documents of the United States - the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights - and examined how these texts shaped enduring ideas of freedom, equality, and democratic governance.

Through interactive discussions, multimedia presentations, and activity-based learning, participants reflected on the lasting relevance of these principles and their influence on civic life even today. ✨
