A significant milestone in this journey was the initiative by CINEC to introduce Logistics as a subject in the Sri Lankan school curriculum in 2017. This initiative recognized that logistics should not only be developed as a professional discipline but also introduced to young people as an important field of study and career opportunity.
In 2021, under the leadership of the Ministry of Transport, the Government established 16 August as National Logistics Day, following a proposal submitted to the Cabinet. The establishment of the national day represented an important recognition of logistics as a strategic national sector and helped bring greater visibility to the profession.
The same day marked another historic milestoneโthe publication of the first Sinhala textbook on Logistics, authored by Professor Lalith Edirisinghe. The book introduced the officially approved Sinhala terminology for Logistics, developed with the approval of the Department of Official Languages, thereby creating an important foundation for communicating logistics knowledge in the Sinhala language.
The profession has continued to build its identity and recognition through the collective efforts of industry and professional institutions. The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers composed a dedicated song to commemorate National Logistics Day, adding a distinctive cultural dimension to the celebration. Subsequently, the Sri Lanka Freight Forwarders Association (SLFFA) established national-level awards recognizing excellence and achievement in logistics and freight forwarding.
The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) has likewise continued its national awards programme, recognizing outstanding contributions to logistics and transport.
These initiativesโeducation, professional recognition, national awards, industry engagement, and public awarenessโhave collectively contributed to raising the profile of logistics in Sri Lanka.
National Logistics Day is therefore more than a day of celebration. It is a recognition of the journey of a profession that connects industries, enables trade, supports national development, and creates opportunities for future generations.
On this National Logistics Day, we celebrate the professionals, educators, students, institutions, policymakers, and industry partners who continue to strengthen the logistics sector of Sri Lanka.
