In this Experiment, we will study the photoelectric effect on a zinc plate.
Put a cleaned zinc plate on a gold-leaf electroscope.
Use an EHT supply to give a negative charge to the plate.
The gold-leaf rises. Shine the zinc plate with a UV lamp.
Observe the movement of the gold-leaf. the gold-leaf falls down. which indicates that the negativity of
the gold-leaf is reduced. this phenomenon suggests that electrons have escaped from the zinc surface
when it is shined with UV light. Now Charge the zinc plate again.
with a UV lamp, shine the zinc plate through a glass plate.
Observe the movement of the gold-leaf. In this case, the Amount of fall of the gold-leaf is less. This indicates the reduction of number of UV photons due to the glass plate. shine the negatively charged zinc plate
with visible light. No movement of the gold-leaf is observed. This suggests that No photoelectric effect
has taken place due to insufficient energy in light photons.
