2025 වර්ෂය සඳහා අභිනව ශිෂ්‍ය නායක මණ්ඩලය තෝරාගැනීම වෙනුවෙන් " සිසු නයු අභිසෙස්" උත්සවය 2025/06/26 දින මහව කලාප අධ්‍යාපන කාර්‍යාලයේ අධ්‍යාපන අධ්‍යක්ෂ W.D. නිමල් සිරිමාන්න මැතිඳුන්ගේ ප්‍රධානත්වයෙන් පැවැත්විණි.

ව/ම/තුඹුල්ලේගම මහාවිද්‍යාලය විසින් 4 වන වරට සංවිධානය කළ පොසොන් බැති ගී සරණිය 2025/06/09 වන දින විද්‍යාලයීය පරිශ්‍රයේදී සාර්ථකව නිමාවට පත් විය.

කුරුණෑගල දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ මහව කුඩා නගරයේ සිට කිලෝමීටර 7ක් දුරින් පිහිටි තුඹුල්ලේගම ගම්මානයේ, පරම්පරා හැඩගස්වා ඇති පාසලක් ඇත - තුඹුල්ලේගම විද්‍යාලය. 1937 අගෝස්තු 6 වන දින ආරම්භ කරන ලද මෙම පාසල ආරම්භ වූයේ සියඹලා ගසක සෙවණ යට, එක් ගුරුවරයෙකුගේ මඟ පෙන්වීම සහ බිත්තියකට එල්ලා තැබූ කළු ලෑල්ලකින් ය. අද වන විට එහි සිසුන් 400ක්, කැපවූ කාර්ය මණ්ඩල සාමාජිකයින් 27ක් නිහඬව ඔරොත්තු දෙමින් තම කාර්‍යය කරගෙන යයි.
සිංහල මාධ්‍ය ආයතනයක් වන මෙම පාසල, 1 ශ්‍රේණියේ සිට 13 ශ්‍රේණිය දක්වා පන්ති පවත්වයි. එහි ගොඩනැගිලි නිහතමානී ය, මැකී යන කහ පැහැයෙන් වර්ණාලේප කර ඇති අතර, දශක ගණනාවක හිරු හා වැස්සෙන් පීඩා විඳි උළු වහලවල් ඇත. සීනුව තවමත් අතින් නාද වේ - සෑම උදෑසනකම 7:30 ට අවට කෙත්වල දෝංකාර දෙන ඝෝෂාවක් මැද පාසල ආරම්භ වේ.
සිසුන් අතර දීප්තිමත් සිනහවක් සහ ඊටත් වඩා දීප්තිමත් සිහින ඇති 5 ශ්‍රේණියේ දැරියක් වන නිමාෂා ද සිටී. ඇගේ පියා ට්‍රැක්ටර් රියදුරෙකි, ඇගේ මව ගෙවතු වගාකාරියකි. සෑම උදෑසනකම, ඇය තම සුදු පැහැති නිල ඇඳුමින් සැරසී, වැසි සමයේදී එක් අතකින් පොත් සහ අනෙක් අතේ කුඩයක් සමබරව පාසලට කිලෝමීටර් දෙකක් ඇවිද යයි. ඇගේ ප්‍රියතම විෂය සිංහල සාහිත්‍යය වන අතර, ඇයට ගුරුවරියක් වීමට අවශ්‍යයි - වරක් තම මවට එකම පන්ති කාමරයේ ඉගැන්වූ සඳමාලි මිස් මෙන්.

පාසල ඉදිරිපස, ඒ පැරණි සියඹලා ගස, ගොරෝසු නමුත් ශක්තිමත් - පාසල මෙන්ම. පාසලේ සෑම කුඩා ජයග්‍රහණයක්ම රසකැවිලි සහ පූජා සමඟ සමරනු ලැබ ඇත. 1980 ගණන්වල පාසලෙන් විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයට ඇතුළු වූ පළමු ශිෂ්‍යයා සහ පසුගිය වසරේ විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයට සිසුන් දෙදෙනෙකු ඇතුළත් වූ විට එය බලා සිටියේය.
සෑම වසරකම අගෝස්තු 6 වන දින, පාසලේ සංවත්සරය සැමරීමට සියළු දෙනා එක්රැස් වේ. පැරණි සිසුන් තෑගි සහ කතා රැගෙන ආපසු පැමිණේ. විශ්‍රාමික ගුරුවරුන්ගේ මල්මාලා සහිත පින්තූර ගෞරවයෙන් ප්‍රදර්ශනය කෙරේ. සුළඟ කිරිබත් සහ හඳුන්කූරු සුවඳයි, පාසල නෙළුම් මල් වලින් සැරසේ.
තුඹුල්ලේගම විද්‍යාලය එහි දේශසීමා වලින් ඔබ්බට ප්‍රසිද්ධ නොවිය හැකිය. නමුත් එහි සරල ගොඩනැගිලි සහ කාලය ගෙවී ගිය පන්ති කාමරවල, එය ගමක සිහින - අතීතය, වර්තමානය සහ අනාගතය රඳවා තබා ගනී.
ඒ සියල්ල ආරම්භ වූ සියඹලා ගස යට, එම සිහින දිගටම වර්ධනය වේ.

In the village of Thumbullegama, just 7 kilometers from Maho, stands a school that has shaped generations — Thumbullegama Vidyalaya. Established on the 6th of August 1937, the school began with a handful of children under the shade of a tamarind tree, guided by one teacher and a blackboard propped against a wall. Today, it is home to 400 students, 27 dedicated staff members, and a legacy of quiet resilience.

The school, a Sinhala-medium institution, offers classes from Grade 1 to Grade 13. Its buildings are modest, painted in fading yellow, with tiled roofs weathered by decades of sun and rain. The bell is still rung by hand — a clang that echoes through the surrounding fields every morning at 7:30.

Among the students is Nimasha, a Grade 5 girl with a bright smile and even brighter dreams. Her father is a tractor driver, her mother a home gardener. Every morning, she walks two kilometers to school in her pressed white uniform, balancing her books in one hand and an umbrella in the other during the rainy season. Her favorite subject is Sinhala literature, and she wants to be a teacher — just like Miss Sandamali, who once taught her mother in the very same classroom.

The school may not have air-conditioned halls or smartboards, but it has something rarer: a deep-rooted connection to its people. The teachers know each child’s story — who needs help with books, who hasn’t had breakfast, who can’t afford the bus fare. They go beyond the syllabus. They teach kindness, patience, and pride in one's village.

In the evenings, the grounds turn into a playground — boys playing cricket with makeshift wickets, girls practicing for the Kala Ulela with their sarees tucked in and giggles floating through the air. The senior students often stay late, revising for exams under the guidance of teachers who refuse to give up on even the weakest student.

Behind the school, that old **tamarind tree still stands**, gnarled but strong — just like the school itself. It has seen every batch come and go, every small victory celebrated with sweetmeats and temple offerings. It watched as the first student from the school entered university in the 1980s, and again when two students joined medical college just last year.

On the **6th of August each year**, the whole village gathers to celebrate the school’s anniversary. Past students come back, carrying gifts and stories. Garlanded portraits of retired teachers are displayed with reverence. The air smells of milk rice and joss sticks, and the school is decorated with lotus flowers and students’ artwork.

**Thumbullegama Vidyalaya** may not be famous beyond its borders. But in its simple buildings and timeworn classrooms, it holds the dreams of a village — past, present, and future.

And under the tamarind tree, where it all began, those dreams continue to grow.
