Educational institute I Research centre I Knowledge sharing space More - www.spaceeka.com

Our artists set aside the time to build a space in which the philosophical understanding of the purpose of one's existence as a human being or an artist can be understood. In 2021 we established the SpaceEka Residency, an artists’ residency in Maharagama, Colombo. As a group of artists coming from various artistic backgrounds, ethnicities, and genders we understood the importance of an artist havi

"This is not a story that began yesterday. It began nearly two centuries ago"

The Hills Are Not Silent is a contemporary performance created and performed by children from the Kaley community. The performance explores themes of labour, identity, displacement, womanhood, and resistance, inviting audiences to reflect on history, humanity, and the universal right to belong. At its heart, this performance reminds us: no community is voiceless, no history is insignificant, and no child should inherit silence.

WHAT IS SRI LANKAN RHYTHM?
Sri Lankans seem to possess an inherent and endemic sense of rhythm. It’s evident in the rich lineage of drum culture, by the rhythm and percussiveness in the way Sri Lankans speak...even in the way kottu is chopped.

RHYTHM RESIDENCY is a creative exploration of Sri Lanka’s rhythmic and percussive culture, presented by forthcoming record label .records and floating artist residency

Traditional low country drummers will meet with contemporary Sri Lankan artists to cultivate a culture of experimentation, to see how these traditional and contemporary art forms can be in conversation with one another, and to document what emerges.

𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵: Beyond Form. Movement Research and Improvisation

This workshop is a collection of proposals that lead to a greater awareness of your body in movement. An understanding of how to better your sense of coordination, spatial awareness, balance/off balance, and articulate movement to reach a higher level of artistry. These essentials form a solid base for all dance training, regardless of style.

Working with this type of Improvisation can open up new perceptions of how you see dance and it will highlight your authentic performing qualities. It will help you to reach and clearly define new, unfamiliar ideas.

This newfound sense of your body in motion leads to new levels of creativity and often translates into breakthrough results. It is often an opening into your true possibilities and it can become a defining element in many forms of creative processes.

Third phase of the first international Living and Learning Camp by SpaceEka Artists' Residency commenced on 24th of June, 2024 with a number multidisciplinary artists.

With the supervision of Lauren Wilson, Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina and Jayampathi Guruge, Artistic Director of SpaceEka Artists' Residency the participants delved into multiple realms of practices allowing them to extend their knowledge and capacities within their respective creative disciplines. These practices also included physical training, Kalaripayattu and movement exploration with Pathum Dharmarthna

This phase of the residency came along as a collaborative exploration of following artists where they optimally utilized this time to explore within their respective practices while supporting one another as a community. Nuwan Gunawardane, Chanaka Kankanamge, Arjuna Dissanayake, Ruwan Vijalamage, Pathum Dharmarthna, Thilina De Silva, Shalini Wanninayaka, Nethma Mettananda, Chamith Perera and Amila Keerthi Bandara came together as the participants of this initiative. Furthermore, the participants were also joined by other renowned artists such as Veteran artist Sunil Shilpadipathi, Isuru Kumarasinghe and Sara Mikolai who shared their expertise and extended their support towards the activities of the residency. With the gained experiences and insights the participants of phase 03 proceeded into bringing multiple productions into life in fields of performance, self-narration, photography, cinematography, eco-musicology, dance, vocals, costume design and fashion photography.

We hope to share the productions and all other creative outcomes of this phase in the near future. We extend our sincere gratitude to all resource persons, participants and supporters for their contribution.
