Awareness Programme on the New Curriculum Development Initiative – 2026
The National Institute of Education (NIE) officially launched the Awareness Programme on the New Curriculum Development Initiative – 2026 on 17 August 2026 for its academic and administrative staff.
The programme was chaired by the Director General of NIE, Senior Professor O. G. Dayaratna-Banda, who introduced the New Curriculum Development Initiatives and highlighted the key directions of the reform under the theme “Transforming Education, Transforming Sri Lanka.”
The reform marks a significant shift from a traditional content-based approach towards outcome-based education, focusing on competencies, skills, and real-world application. The Training of Trainers (ToT) Handbook was also introduced to support a common understanding of the new curriculum.
Following the initial programme at NIE, a series of awareness programmes were conducted for key stakeholders, including officers of the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Higher Education and Vocational Education, Department of Examinations, Department of Publications, National Colleges of Education (NCoEs), Professional Development Centres, and Teachers’ Colleges. These programmes aim to build a shared understanding and ensure coordinated implementation of the new curriculum.
The new curriculum is expected to be implemented for Grades 2 and 6 from 2027. As a major step towards implementation, NIE will conduct a three-month Training of Trainers (ToT) programme for approximately 9,000 trainers and teacher educators island-wide, commencing on 31 August 2026.
NIE continues to lead this national initiative towards a future-ready, learner-centred, outcome-based and quality education system for Sri Lanka.
Together, we move forward in transforming education through National Curriculum Reform 2027.

🌱 STARTING RIGHT – A Strong Foundation for Every Child’s Lifelong Learning

14 August 2026, marked an important milestone in strengthening Early Childhood Education in Sri Lanka with the official launch of the National Early Childhood Education Curriculum Framework – Teacher’s Guide and Suggested Activity Guide, held at the Ministry of Education, Isurupaya.

The journey began on 21 November 2025, with the introduction of the National Early Childhood Education Curriculum Framework (ECECF) for the first time in Sri Lanka. Building on this national framework, a set of supporting resources has now been developed to facilitate its implementation in preschool settings:

📘 Teacher’s Guide
📗 Suggested Activity Guide
🎨 Preschool Teaching–Learning Resource Kit
📙 Master Trainer Training Manual

Together, these resources aim to bridge the gap between the national curriculum framework and everyday practice, supporting teachers to create safe, inclusive, meaningful and child-centred learning experiences.

The approach places the child at the centre, recognising that young children learn through play, exploration, interaction, creativity and meaningful experiences.

A key message of this initiative is:

STARTING RIGHT

A Strong Foundation for Every Child’s Lifelong Learning

The success of this national initiative will ultimately be reflected not simply in the resources developed, but in the changes we see in preschool classrooms—in teachers’ practices and, most importantly, in the happiness, confidence, curiosity and learning of our children.

🙏 Our sincere appreciation to UNICEF Sri Lanka for its valuable partnership and continued support in strengthening early childhood education and supporting the development of these important resources.

Our gratitude also goes to the Ministry of Education, National Institute of Education, academic and technical teams, subject specialists, reviewers, trainers, development partners, and all those who contributed their knowledge, time and commitment to this national endeavour.

Today is not the end of the journey.

It is the beginning of implementation.

🌱 Starting Right – for every child, everywhere.
