15th Director General of the National Institute of Education Assumes Duties
Senior Professor OG Dayaratna-Banda has assumed duties as the 15th Director General of the
National Institute of Education (NIE).
He currently serves as a Senior Professor in Economics at the University of Peradeniya. He holds
a Bachelor of Arts in Economics (First Class Honours in Monetary Economics) and a Master of
Philosophy in Economics from the same university. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in
Economics from the National University of Singapore.
Prof. Dayaratna-Banda has extensive international academic exposure, having served as a
Visiting Research Professor at the University of Waterloo and as a Visiting Senior Fellow at
Transylvania University.
He previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Peradeniya from 2015 to
2021. He has also held key academic leadership roles, including Head of the Department of
Economics and Statistics and Chairman of the Higher Degrees Committee, contributing
significantly to the establishment of the PGIHS. In addition, he served as Dean of the Faculty of
Management at the Uva Wellassa University.
A widely published academic, Prof. Dayaratna-Banda has contributed to numerous international
journals and policy research working papers. His work has appeared in prestigious platforms
such as the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Centre for International Governance
Innovation.
His primary research interests include applied macroeconomics, international trade and finance,
free trade agreements, banking and finance, economic development, and institutional economics.
