හයියෙන් වහිනවා කියන එකට සාමාන්‍යයෙන් it's raining heavily කියලා කිව්වට, ඊට වඩා වෙනස් විදියකට කියන්න පුලුවන් it's raining cats and dogs කියලා. මෙතනදි අපි සත්තු වහිනවා කියලා කියන්නෙ නෑ. මේ යෙදුම දාහත්වැනි ශතවර්ෂයේ ඉඳන්ම පාවිච්චි වෙනවා කියලා wikipedia වල සඳහන් වෙනවා.

අලුත් අවුරුද්දෙ හා හා පුරා කියලා Google බලද්දි අහම්බෙන් වගේ දැක්කා කාලෙකට කලින් මම ඉගෙන ගත්තු දෙයක්. මේකට කියන්නෙ Cockroach Theory එහෙමත් නැත්නම් "කැරපොතු න්‍යාය" කියලා. මේක මුල්වරට කියල තියෙන්නෙ Google සමාගමේ ප්‍රධාන විධායක නිලධාරී, සුන්දර් පිචායි මහතා.
මේ න්‍යාය අපේ පෞරුෂත්වය සංවර්ධනය කරගන්න ගොඩක් වැදගත් වෙනවා. අපි නිසි මානසිකත්වයක නැති අවස්ථාවකදි කියන කරන දේවල් වලින්, අපි ගන්න තීරණ වලින් අපිට ගොඩක් අවාසි සහගත තත්වයක් ඇතිවෙනවා කියලයි මේ න්‍යායෙන්, ඒ වගේම මේ පහලින් තියෙන කතාවෙන් සුන්දර් පිචායි මහතා පැහැදිලි කරන්නෙ.

At a restaurant, a cockroach suddenly flew from somewhere and sat on a lady.

She started screaming out of fear.

With a panic-stricken face and trembling voice, she started jumping, with both her hands desperately trying to get rid of the cockroach.

Her reaction was contagious, as everyone in her group also got panicky.

The lady finally managed to push the cockroach away but ...it landed on another lady in the group.

Now, it was the turn of the other lady in the group to continue the drama.

The waiter rushed forward to their rescue.

In the relay of throwing, the cockroach next fell upon the waiter.

The waiter stood firm, composed himself and observed the behaviour of the cockroach on his shirt.

When he was confident enough, he grabbed it with his fingers and threw it out of the restaurant.

Sipping my coffee and watching the amusement, the antenna of my mind picked up a few thoughts and started wondering, was the cockroach responsible for their histrionic behaviour?

If so, then why was the waiter not disturbed?

He handled it near to perfection, without any chaos.

It is not the cockroach, but the inability of those people to handle the disturbance caused by the cockroach, that disturbed the ladies.

I realized that it is not the shouting of my father or my boss or my wife that disturbs me, but it's my inability to handle the disturbances caused by their shouting that disturbs me.

It's not the traffic jams on the road that disturbs me, but my inability to handle the disturbance caused by the traffic jam that disturbs me.

More than the problem, it's my reaction to the problem that creates chaos in my life.

Lessons learnt from the story:

I understood I should not react in life.

I should always respond.

The women reacted, whereas the waiter responded.

Reactions are always instinctive whereas responses are always well thought of, just and right to save a situation from going out of hands, to avoid cracks in relationships, to avoid taking decisions in anger, anxiety, stress or hurry.

A beautiful way to understand life. The happy person is not because everything is right in his life. He is happy because his attitude towards everything in his life is right!

Vocabulary

• Panic-stricken - භීතියට පත්ව
• Desperately - මෙතනදී මෙහි තේරුම ලෙස ගත යුත්තේ මහත් පරිශ්‍රමයකින් / ඕනෑකමකින් යන්නයි. (to emphasize the extreme level of something)
• Get rid of - බේරෙන්න
• Contagious - මෙතනදී මෙහි තේරුම ලෙස ගත යුත්තේ විෂබීජ වලින් බේරෙන්න වගේ තේරුමක්.
“Her reaction was contagious” - ඇය ප්‍රතිචාර දැක්වූයේ ජරාවෙන් (කැරපොත්තාගෙන්) බේරීමටය.

• Amusement - විනෝදය
• My mind picked up a few thoughts - මගේ හිතට යම් අදහස් කිහිපයක් ආවා
• Histrionic behaviour - අවධානය ගත් ඒ හැසිරීම
• Chaos - විනාශය
• Instinctive - සිතීමකින් තොරව, ඉබේ, ඉවෙන් මෙන්
• Well thought of - හොඳට හිතලා
• Anxiety - සාංකාව / a feeling of worry.

ඒක වැරදියි. Academic writing වලත්, ඒ වගේම native level speaking වලත්, අපි කියන්න ඕනෙ. “for example” හරි, එහෙමත් නැත්නම් “for instance” කියලයි.

කෙනෙක්ට තර්ක කරන්න පුලුවන් ඇයි අපි vowel වලින් පටන් ගන්න වචනෙකට ඉස්සරහින් an දාන්නෙ නැත්තෙ කියලා. ඒක සාධාරණයි. හැබැයි native level එකේ පාවිච්චි වෙන විදිය නිසා non-natives විදියට ඒක අපිටත් අදාල වෙනවා.

“for example” සහ “for instance” පාවිච්චි වෙන්නෙ ප්‍රකාශයක් වැඩිදුර තහවුරු කරන්න වුනාට, වැඩියෙන් පාවිච්චි කරන්නෙ “for example” බවත් මතක තියාගන්න.

පලවෙනි comment එකෙ ලස්සන වාක්‍ය ටිකක් දාලා තියෙනවා. බලන්න. 😊😊👍

In academic writing, and in native level speaking, we normally don’t say “for an example” or “ for an instance”. Instead, we omit the indefinite article “an” when it comes to writing and speaking. Someone can argue why there is such an omission. It’s fair. However, it is a very rare usage.

Both of these expressions are used when a speaker or writer wants to introduce a specific person or thing that helps to explain or confirm a general statement. However, “for example” is used much more frequently than “for instance”, particularly in formal contexts.

Some idiomatic expressions that you can use in writing as well as speaking..(කාර්‍යාලය තුල පාවිච්චි කල හැකි idiomatic expressions).

* Many things on the plate -

This expression can be used when you have been assigned with many responsibilities. (ගොඩක් වගකිම් ඔයා පිට පැටවිලා තියෙන වෙලාවක)

E.g.: I cannot take a leave this Friday as I have many things on my plate.

* Bigger fish to fry -

This expression can be used when you have something very important to do at that particular moment. (යම් කිසි වෙලාවක් තුල වැදගත් වැඩක නිරත වී සිටීම නිසා වෙනත් දෙයක් කල නොහැකි වූ විට)

E.g.: I'm really sorry for not being able to participate for that meeting. I have a bigger fish to fry.

* Learn the ropes -

This expression can be used when you have something new to learn or to do. (අලුතින් යමක් ඉගෙනීමට හෝ කිරීමට ඇතිවිට/සිදුවන විට)

E.g.: I am ready to take up the challenge to learn the ropes.

Spoken වලින් කොහොමද කියන්නෙ? උඩ තියෙන්නේ written form එක.❓

🗣️ "You decide the depth of desire based on how deep the agony is" - ඔයා ආශාවෙ ප්‍රමානය / ගැඹුර තීරණය කරන්නෙ වේදනාවේ ගැඹුර ගැන මත පදනම්ව.
