Lack of Mechanization of paddy transplanting in Sri Lanka and the unsuitability of imported Dapog Tray transplanters have become issues in paddy cultivation. A mechanized transplanter was developed for the parachute (bubble tray) method which is recognized as a higher yield method for short-term local rice varieties. A novel venturi valve was developed for the seedling ejection from the modified bubble tray combined with a feeder mechanism which is attached to a two-wheel tractor with PLC control.

The major cause of bridge failures is known as the scouring effect of bridge supports. It’s due to the scour hole which propagates around the bridge support due to flowing water. Routine inspections should be carried out to keep the safety in check. Normally this underwater data gathering is done by using divers and it costs lots of money, resources, and time. As a solution for that issue, an underwater robot was designed and tested which can be remotely operated to inspect the scouring effect and infrastructure of the riverbed.

A novel combined ground and areal platform (UGAV) was developed with autonomous navigation capabilities. Aerial system was equipped with thrust vector mechanism system which increases speed of forward motion and reduce drag due to the less tilting angle of the platform. Aero body design has increased the lift force of the platform. Autonomous waypoint navigation is enabled along with vision-based obstacle avoidance system which is equipped with stereo camera.

In this project, a multitasking intelligent robotics system has been developed for the hospital environment. The system consists of a mobile platform, manipulator and an attachable passenger carrier. Designs and simulations were carried out with different software platforms and finally, a prototype was fabricated with an intelligent control system.

A group of undergraduates from Batch 18 (DoME, UoM) conducted an Arduino workshop successfully for the 4th consecutive year. School students were so keen to learn new things and actively participated in the 2-days workshop. This project was conducted to Advanced Level - Technology Stream students in Bandarawela Dharmapala Vidyalaya.

Currently, covid 19 pandemic has created many problems in the world. This project is conducted to minimize the impact of that virus. The proposed design consists of three parts; mobile platform, robotic manipulator, and passenger compartment. The mobile platform is used to move the robot inside the hospital environment. All the pick and place and material handling tasks are carried out by the robotic manipulator. The passenger compartment allows one medical officer to move inside the hospital safely and collect samples from patients.
Three students; 𝐒. 𝐊. 𝐃𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐚, 𝐊. 𝐌. 𝐓. 𝐌. 𝐁. 𝐊𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌. 𝐀. 𝐀. 𝐌𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐡𝐞 from the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, UOM (MSES batch '16) has proposed the design to the 𝐈𝐌𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐄 𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝 𝟏𝟗 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 under the supervision of 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐘. 𝐖. 𝐑. 𝐀𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐡𝐞, Mechatronic stream coordinator, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, UOM. The project won the 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 place in the competition after competing with 14 teams.
