History
Nugawela then was a small village, with full of scenic beauty and it is situated in Kandy District, about 8km on the Kandy Kurunegala Road. This village is very close to the historic Malagammana Temple and the land for the college was donated by the late Hon. It was this school that become the present Central College on 4th of January 1944 under guidance of the late Hon.C.W.W. Kannangara,
the father of free education of Sri Lanka. This College was opened by the Late Hon. Senanayaka, the first Prime Minister in 1952. In 1953 a 100 meter long building was constructed to cater the needs of 250 resident male student and another building was constructed in 1955 for female resident students. In 2001, three storey building was constructed to house the Library and Computer apartment and when the need arose again, in 2005 another storeyed building to hold 10 classes were put up in 2007, then making the college an educational institution in the area fully equipped with all the necessary building facilities. The first Principal was Mr. Mayadunna and thereafter so many and eminent educationalists have served in the college as Principals. The present Principal is Mr. Hettiarachchi engaged in yeoman service to the College. Since its inception this college has served more than Hundred thousand students in the field of Arts, Science, Commerce, Medicine, Engineering etc... There were and there are so many prominent individuals who were and who are past pupils of this college, who has served and who are serving the nation in almost in all the fields. The college has produced many academics, who have shined in their respective fields. Administrative, Medical, Engineering, Armed forces etc. And it is also very interesting to note that thing College has produced many University Professors and lectures, who have served and who are serving in our national Universities as well as recognized foreign universities.
