On a day like today...
127 years ago, on June 30th 1887, Dharmaraja College was founded under the name 'Kandy Buddhist High School' by Col. Henry Steele Olcott, an American theosophist. The school was started in the premises of the Natha Devalaya, with Andiris de Silva as the Headmaster which enrolled 12 students.
It was a time when Buddhists were deprived of their education rights by the Christian missionary education system. Therefore this Buddhist educational institution was a long awaited aspiration of the Buddhist community of that time.
From its inception, Dharmaraja College has come a long way as a dominant force in Sri Lankan education. Currently, Dharmaraja College serves as a national school providing education for more than 4500 pupils with more than 175 teaching staff.
Today Mother Dharmaraja Celebrates the 127th anniversary, as a premium Buddhist school in Sri Lanka, with her proud sons achieving marvelous accomplishments.
Long Live Mother Dharmaraja!!!

Founding of Dharmaraja
June 30, 1887
In the morning of Thursday, June 30, 1887, Dharmaraja College, under the name of 'Kandy Buddhist High School', was opened in a site near Natha Devalaya of Sri Dalada Maligawa. Wadugodapitiya Punchirala Korale, felled and removed the Bo tree which covered the site in the previous night.
Andiris de Silva served as the 1st principal and the only teacher of the school at that time, which had enrolled 12 students.
Dharmaraja College was founded with the objective of providing proper education for Sinhala Buddhists, a goal which led to the foundation of other leading Buddhist schools in Sri Lanka, including Ananda College, Mahinda College and Maliyadeva College, under the patronage of The Colombo Buddhist Theosophical Society, headed by Colonel Henry Steel Olcott.
Today Mother Dharmaraja Celebrates the 126th birthday, as one of the premium Buddhist schools in Sri Lanka, with her proud sons achieving marvellous accomplishments.
Long Live Mother Dharmaraja!!!
