Nishan was my first staff member and has been with me for an incredible 7 years, standing by my side through thick and thin. I’m so proud to see him thriving as the head barista at Salty Swamis. Even more special is his accomplishment as my first student to successfully complete the SCA Barista Skills Foundation.

We’re really proud to share some big news from Buono Coffee Academy. Our trainer, Tishan Wijesooriya, has officially become an AST Authorized Trainer under the SCA program for the 2025 to 2028 period.

What this means, simply put, is that he has been trained, assessed, and approved by the Specialty Coffee Association to deliver internationally recognised coffee education at the highest standard.

This isn’t just a title. It reflects strong technical knowledge, real teaching ability, and a commitment to global best practices in coffee.

For our students, it means learning from a trainer who meets international benchmarks and follows up to date SCA standards in every class.

This is a big milestone for us as an academy and a strong reassurance to everyone who trains with us that you are learning coffee the right way, from the right people.

This round of SCA Brewing Intermediate training took us on the road. We ran sessions at and in Matara, and at .honey.cafe in Ahangama. It was a great way to share the course in real café spaces and work hands-on with baristas where they brew every day.

Big thanks to Ellis for leading the training and making each session practical, clear, and inspiring.

From 27 August to 7 September at Buono Coffee Academy, Caleb brought world-class expertise and an inspiring spirit that gave participants the confidence and skills to push our coffee culture forward. This was more than training – it was a milestone for Sri Lanka’s specialty coffee journey.

For the first time in Sri Lanka, we hosted SCA Barista Skills Intermediate & Professional together with SCA Brewing Intermediate at Buono Coffee Academy.

From 27 August to 7 September, the training was led by Caleb Ellis, who brought world-class expertise and an inspiring approach to every session. It was a milestone for our coffee community, giving participants not just certifications but practical skills and confidence to raise the bar for specialty coffee in Sri Lanka.
