Today we introduce you to a German man who was almost exclusively a pure mathematician yet, he almost beat to the general theory of relativity after studying physics 3 years only. Einstein published several papers in (The Field Equations of Gravitation) November 1915. Nearly simultaneously, he published (The Foundations of Physics), an axiomatic derivation of the field equations. But he credited Einstein as the originator of the theory and no public priority dispute concerning the field equations ever arose between the two men during their lives. That great German mathematician is our "scientist of the day" today.

Hilbert was one of the most influential mathematicians of the 19th & early 20th centuries. He discovered and developed a broad range of fundamental ideas including invariant theory, the calculus of variations, commutative algebra, algebraic number theory, the foundations of geometry, spectral theory of operators & its application to integral equations, mathematical physics, and the foundations of mathematics (particularly proof theory).

By 1907, Einstein had framed the fundamentals of the theory of , but then struggled for ......

Meet the NASA Astronauts heading to space on our upcoming Crew-9 mission!

This fall, commander Zena Cardman, pilot Nick Hague, and mission specialist Stephanie Wilson will be joined by cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov for a six-month stay aboard the International Space Station.

This is the ninth rotational mission in our Commercial Crew program, which is making human space travel more reliable and more affordable. Crew-8, our next Commercial Crew launch, is currently scheduled to lift off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in mid-February.

Today we introduce you to an Italian man who was one of very few physicists to excel in both physics and physics. He made significant contributions to the development of , , and and physics. Particles that obey the exclusion principle are called , in his honour. That great Italian man is our "scientist of the day" today.

It's death anniversary of , one of the most significant figures in physics in the 20th century - - -

(Scientist of the Day - 28 November)

Fermi was the enigmatic physicist, teacher, mentor and the creator of the world's first nuclear reactor, the . His first major contribution involved the field of statistical mechanics. After formulated his principle in 1925, Fermi followed with a paper in which he applied the principle to an ideal gas, employing a statistical formulation now known as statistics. Today, particles that obey the exclusion principle are called fermions.

Pauli later postulated the existence of an invisible particle emitted along with an during decay, to satisfy the law of conservation of energy. Fermi took up this idea, developing a model that incorporated the postulated particle, which he named the . His theory, later referred to as Fermi's interaction and now called , described one of the four interactions in nature.

Through experiments inducing with the discovered , Fermi discovered that neutrons were more easily captured by atomic nuclei than fast ones, and he developed the Fermi equation to describe this. After bombarding and with slow neutrons, he concluded that he had created new elements. Although he was awarded the for this discovery, the new elements were later revealed to be nuclear fission products.

Fermi led the team that designed and built Chicago Pile-1, which went critical on 2 December 1942, demonstrating the first human-created, self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction. He was present at the test on 16 July 1945, where he used his 'Fermi method' to estimate the bomb's yield. He has been called the "architect of the nuclear age" and the "architect of the atomic bomb".

He did important work in particle physics, especially related to and , and he speculated that rays arose when material was accelerated by magnetic fields in interstellar space.

Many awards, concepts, and institutions are named after Fermi, including the Enrico Fermi Award, the Enrico Fermi Institute, the Fermilab, the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, and the synthetic element (atomic number 100), making him one of 16 scientists who have elements named after them.

You must have heard about CERN, but, did you know who was its first Director-General? When CERN was being set up in the early 1950s, its founders were searching for someone of stature and international prestige to head the fledgling international laboratory, and in 1954, a Swiss-born American man became CERN's first Director-General and he is our "scientist of the day" today.

It's the birthday of , one of the founders of solid-state physics - - -

(Scientist of the Day - 23 October)

Bloch earned his PhD at the University of Leipzig under . For his thesis he analyzed the problem of electrons moving in a periodic lattice. His solution to the Schrรถdinger equation in a periodic potential (now known as the Bloch wave) - Bloch's theorem (look the equation shown in image) was a landmark in the quantum theory of condensed matter.

He worked :-
1) on superconductivity with in Zรผrich; with Hans Kramers and Adriaan Fokker in Holland.
2) with on ferromagnetism, where he developed a description of boundaries between magnetic domains, now known as "Bloch walls", and theoretically proposed a concept of spin waves, excitations of magnetic structure.
3) with in Copenhagen, where he worked on a theoretical description of the stopping of charged particles traveling through matter, and with in Rome.

In 1938, Bloch began working with the 37 inch cyclotron at the University of California, Berkeley to determine the magnetic moment of the neutron. In 1945, he made again a great contribution to physics: The discovery that hydrogen nuclei in water could resonantly absorb energy from radio waves when placed in a strong magnetic field. He shared the 1952 physics with another co-discoverer of condensed-matter NMR, .
