In traditional Theravada Buddhism, "Bodhi" or awakening is defined as the comprehension and realization of the Four Noble Truths. Buddhism outlines three forms of awakening: Sammā Sambuddha Bodhi (Supreme Buddhahood), Pacceka Buddha Bodhi (Solitary Buddhahood), and Sāvaka Buddha Bodhi (Disciplehood / Arahanthood).
In all three modes of awakening, the one who attains realization wakes up to the grave perils of Samsara (the cycle of rebirth) and prioritizes crossing over, ultimately achieving the cessation of existence. To reach these states, scriptures mention that fulfilling Pāramitās (perfections) requires distinct spans of time:
Sammā Sambuddha Bodhi: 20 Asankheyya (incalculable eras) and 100,000 Kalpas (eons).
Pacceka Buddha Bodhi: 2 Asankheyya and 100,000 Kalpas.
Chief Disciple (Aggasāvaka) Bodhi: 1 Asankheyya and 100,000 Kalpas.
Great Disciple (Mahāsāvaka) Bodhi: 100,000 Kalpas.
However, for general disciple awakenings—such as attaining Arahanthood with the Four Analytical Knowledges (Catu-patisambhidā), the Six Higher Knowledges (Chalabhiññā), the Threefold Knowledge (Tevijjā), or as a Dry-visioned Arahant (Sukkhavipassaka)—no fixed timeframe is specified in the sacred texts.
Therefore, if someone strongly longs for awakening and, driven by an earnest aspiration for realization, cultivates the higher training of Virtue (Sīla), Concentration (Samādhi), and Wisdom (Paññā)—taking Venerable Rahula Arahant as an inspiration for devotion to spiritual discipline—they can fully commit themselves to this path. Through such dedication, under the refuge of the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha, and by securing the guidance of spiritual friends (Kalyāṇa-mittatā), one can attain realization within this Gautama Buddha dispensation.
To achieve this, many sacrifices are required. We must undertake this practice with absolute determination—placing the path above life itself, surrendering ego, and putting our own worldly desires second. We ought to strive to make every necessary effort toward this goal.
Therefore, let us strive in this Gautama Buddha dispensation to attain at least the state of a Sukkhavipassaka Arahant or a Tevijjā Arahant, devoting ourselves to a life of heedfulness. Supported by a genuine devotion to the Dispensation, while cultivating Virtue, Concentration, and Wisdom without attachment to them, may the protective grace of awakening extend to all beings of the human world, the deva realms, the brahma realms, and across the universe.
May all beings be well. May all beings be happy. May all beings attain the peaceful supreme bliss of Nibbāna. 🙏💐🪷☸️
