Greater coucal (Centropus sinensis) has a black bill with chestnut wings. Both male and female are similar in external features. Common breeding residents in Sri Lanka. Distributed in Sri Lanka, India, Philippines and south Asian countries. Ground feeders feed on insects, small vertebrates including other birds' eggs and nestlings. Have a booming call with repeating coop-coop-coop with variations. Hear their call in this audio recording. Human population and development increasing day by day and these development activities fragment forest area by dividing into separate parts. These actions cause bird-vehicle collisions and threaten their population. As Greater Coucals are ground feeders, they eat insects on roads and smashed to the heavy vehicles during short flights. Awareness is important for conserving them.
