🚨 Windows 11 Update Breaks Localhost: What Developers Need to Know
🔧 If you’ve recently noticed that your local development server has suddenly stopped responding to localhost or 127.0.0.1, you’re not alone — and it’s not your code.
Microsoft has confirmed a bug in recent Windows 11 updates that is impacting local HTTP traffic, leaving developers scratching their heads.
🧠 What’s Going On?
After installing recent cumulative updates — specifically KB5066835 or the earlier KB5065789 — many users running Windows 11 version 24H2/25H2 began experiencing issues when trying to connect to services hosted on localhost.
Symptoms include:
ERR_CONNECTION_RESET or ERR_HTTP2_PROTOCOL_ERROR in browsers
IIS or .NET Core apps failing silently
Development servers timing out or hanging on local requests
This issue primarily affects services that rely on the Windows HTTP.sys driver — which powers IIS and other system-level HTTP services.
🛠️ Why This Matters
For developers, testers, and DevOps engineers, localhost is a lifeline. It’s where development begins — from running web apps in Node, Flask, .NET, or Java, to testing API integrations and CI/CD pipelines.
A broken localhost environment means:
Lost productivity
Confusing debugging sessions
Delayed releases and frustrated teams
✅ Microsoft’s Response
Microsoft has acknowledged the issue and is rolling out a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) fix — meaning the fix will be applied silently via Windows Update, without requiring user action.
However, depending on your update status, the fix may not be applied yet.
🧰 Workarounds
If you’re affected, here are some options:
1. Reboot and Check for Updates
Sometimes the KIR rollback requires a restart to take effect.
2. Temporarily Disable HTTP/2
You can disable HTTP/2 in the registry to restore functionality:
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP\Parameters' -Name 'EnableHttp2Tls' -Value 0 -PropertyType DWord
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP\Parameters' -Name 'EnableHttp2Cleartext' -Value 0 -PropertyType DWord
Note: Requires restart. Proceed with caution and only if you understand the implications.
3. Roll Back the Update
Uninstall the update via:
wusa /uninstall /kb:5066835
Only do this if necessary — removing security updates carries risks.
💬 Final Thoughts
This bug is a reminder of how tightly intertwined OS-level changes are with our development environments. While Microsoft is actively resolving it, awareness is key.
If your localhost server stops working, it might not be you — it might be Windows.
