Sociology of Education – Session 1
What does it consider?
It examines how education as a social institution functions within society. It explores how education is influenced by, and in turn influences, other social institutions such as the family, economy, religion, culture, and the state.
It also looks at the two-way relationship between education and these institutions—how they shape education and how education impacts them.
Sociologists of education study how knowledge is transmitted, how learning takes place in different social contexts, and how education is interpreted from a sociological perspective.

Discourse, Power, Exclusions and Erasure
🌟 Discourse is something that we make as choices, the way we behave, and the things we create. According to Michele Foucault discourse as a system of thought composed of
💡ideas
💡attitudes
💡 actions
💡 beliefs and
💡 practices that constitutes subjects and are in turn constituted by them
The important thing about discourse is it can produce and limit truth
That's how power legitimised as power operates through inclusions and exclusions.
The traditions, practices and also some norms are formed as discourses. Those are long term practices that certain communities exercise over a long time period. We cannot either neglect nor refuse as we get use to them as a practice
Accordingly, certain things got erasure in society with the time may be willingly or unwillingly
Ex- Tamils started to use sinhala names to avoid discrimination
