The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.”

This year’s two Nobel Prize laureates in physics have used tools from physics to develop methods that are the foundation of today’s powerful machine learning. John Hopfield created an associative memory that can store and reconstruct images and other types of patterns in data. Geoffrey Hinton invented a method that can autonomously find properties in data, and so perform tasks such as identifying specific elements in pictures.

These three highest scoring finalists were selected from 27 schools from the semifinal rounds held at Stein Studios, Ratmalana. The 27 schools for the TV rounds were selected from over 5000 school students from preliminary rounds held island-wide in November 2023 to February 2024.

Antibodies are proteins that target and bind to viruses or bacteria with extreme precision.

Sir Gregory Winter used the principles of evolution to create new antibodies. He used "phage display", a method where a bacteriophage – a virus that infects bacteria with its genes – is used to evolve new proteins.

His work has led to new pharmaceuticals, including medicines to treat arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and cancer. In 2018 it also led to the Nobel Prize.

As a child, a Dutch boy loved to experiment with windmills and other machines and to watch the ripples produced by throwing a stone into water. The great French scientist was later impressed by his skills in geometry, as was , who christened him "the new Archimedes". Mersenne, the famous French polymath, wrote to his father that his child had the potential to “even surpass ”. That Dutch boy is our "scientist of the day" today.

Richmond College Junior Quiz Team emerged champions at "Mind Probe'23" the inter-school junior quiz competition organized by Ananda College, Colombo on the 7th of March, 2024. The team clinched the championship after defeating D.S Senanayake College Colombo in the final.
