WHERE IS NIYAGAMA HOUSE?

Thanks to the internet and Google search, the World seems to be smaller than it was 20 years ago. And many people do travel a lot. But just in case you still not have been to Sri Lanka, I found this little map some days ago, so that I can show you.

Stepping out of the airport in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital, it’s a two-hour drive down south to our place.

If you have never been to Asia before, here are some more details:

1.) Where is Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean, southeast of the Indian subcontinent, and is part of South Asia. It lies in the tropics, with the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar separating it from India.

2.) How big is Sri Lanka?

It has a maximum length of approximately 435 kilometers (270 miles) from north to south and a maximum width of about 225 kilometers (140 miles) from east to west.

3.) How hot is it in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate with high year-round temperatures, but distinct wet and dry seasons influenced by monsoon winds. Coastal areas are generally hot, averaging 28–32°C (82–90°F), while the Central Highlands are cooler, with temperatures around 15-20°C (59-68°F).

As I am writing these lines close to the coastal area of Galle at noon, my ceiling fan is working, I hear the leaves rustling in a breeze outside and the temperature is 30°C (86°F).

In July 2025, the global travel authority Big 7 Travel announced that Sri Lanka has officially been named the most beautiful island in the world. This placed Sri Lanka at the top of its annual “50 Best Islands in the World” list.

For me, it’s no surprise why this teardrop-shaped paradise off the southern coast of India captivates hearts worldwide. From its golden beaches stretching along an 833-mile coastline to the serene, terraced tea plantations that paint the misty mountains green, Sri Lanka truly has it all.

You can explore old temples, stroll through charming colonial towns and visit the wildlife in many national parks.

If it’s really true that Marco Polo himself once called Sri Lanka “the finest island of its size in all the world”, I don’t know.

What I know is, that I am living here since 2007, enjoying everything that magical island has to offer.
