Art Therapy at Home: Helping Your Teen Thrive
Art can be a gentle and powerful way for teenagers to express emotions, reduce stress, and build confidence.
But we know that in Sri Lanka, access to qualified art therapists can be limited or expensive.
That’s why parents play a powerful role in bringing the healing benefits of art into their teen’s everyday life.
Here’s how you can start:
Create a safe, quiet space for art — free from distractions
Offer simple, open-ended tools: crayons, paint, clay, old magazines
Let them explore freely — there are no "wrong" drawings in art
Listen without judging what they create — every piece tells a story
Use their art as a bridge to gently talk about feelings, without pressure
It is great if you can find the time, space and money to take your teen to the few trained professional therapist, but if you can’t don’t skip the therapy. Your support, encouragement, and presence make all the difference.
Art therapy is not about perfect pictures — it’s about creating a safe outlet for self-expression, self-understanding, and emotional healing.
