Sam Popham Arboretum is a sanctuary for the tropical trees of the Dry zone, Sri Lanka’s only dry zone arboretum established over five decades ago.
A unique Arboretum in Sri Lanka's dry zone established 1963 on 7.5 acres of thorny scrub jungle and abandoned ‘Chena’ land in Dambulla which is in the geographical center of our island, where history and culture merge amidst a natural landscape of water and mountains. Sam Popham, founder of the arboretum that bears his name, passed away in May aged 99, and this issue commemorates his extraordinary life and personality with an obituary, a personal reminiscence by a close friend, and a report on the committal of his ashes to the sea off the English city of Portsmouth, where he was born.
