Write about the following topic:

Some people say it is better to be unemployed than work in a job you dislike.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Sample Band 8 Essay
The dilemma of whether being unemployed is preferable compared to working in a job that you dislike is a topic of considerable debate. Personally, I believe that while finding joy in work is important, the benefits of being employed outweigh the downsides of a less-than-ideal job.

Those who advocate for unemployment instead of a dissatisfying job often highlight a belief that life is too short to spend in a job that makes one unhappy. They argue that the free time spent out of workforce can be better used searching for a job that matches one's interests and values, or even pursuing further education to improve job prospects. This perspective suggests that freedom from a disliked job offers mental peace and opens doors to exploring new opportunities that could lead to a more fulfilling career that better aligns with one's passions or values.

Conversely, the importance of having a job, whether it is fulfilling or not, cannot be understated. Employment offers financial stability, crucial for meeting our basic needs and maintaining a desired lifestyle. It also provides structure, social connections, and a sense of purpose, all of which are integral to one's overall well-being. Besides, every job is a learning opportunity, offering valuable experiences that can pave the way to a better position in the future.

In my opinion, while the pursuit of fulfilling work is important, the benefits of being employed should not be overlooked. Having a job provides financial stability and can also be a stepping stone to better opportunities, therefore compensating for the lack of enjoyment.

Writing Task 2

This writing task 2 question has been recently seen in IELTS in Sri Lanka. The essay below is a good example of a Band 8 response.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people think that dangerous sports should be banned, while others believe that people should be free to do any sports or activities.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Sample Band 8 Essay

Opinions on whether dangerous sports should be banned or not are divided. Some argue these sports should be prohibited due to safety concerns, while others advocate for freedom of choice when it comes to sports and emphasise personal choice and the benefits of risk-taking activities. In my opinion, while the concerns regarding the safety of these activities are valid, the individual freedom of choice should prevail.

Those in favour of banning dangerous sports highlight the obvious risks such as severe injuries or even death. Activities like cliff diving or extreme mountain biking are full of inherent dangers that often lead to severe or even fatal accidents. What is more, many young and impressionable people are not fully aware of the consequences of participating in such activities. For them, banning these sports is a valid way to prevent unnecessary harm and the emotional and financial impact that can follow not only to the participants involved but their loved ones as well.

On the flip side, those that advocate for the freedom to choose extreme sports believe that everyone should be free to choose their activities, regardless of the risk level. They argue that high-risk sports can be incredibly rewarding, and offers personal growth and an adrenaline rush that is difficult to find anywhere else. They also point out that with proper training and safety measures, the dangers can be reduced. For example, with thorough training and strict safety protocols the risk of skydiving becomes more manageable and this demonstrates that these activities can be enjoyed responsibly.

In my view, while safety is crucial, it should not overrule people's freedom to choose their sports. Outright banning dangerous sports might prevent some accidents, but it also strips away the right to make personal choices about risk-taking. A balanced approach, where high-risk sports are not banned but regulated through strict safety measures and informed consent is a more reasonable solution.

Writing Task 2

This writing task 2 question has been recently seen in IELTS in the Oman. The essay below is a good example of a Band 8 response.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Young people's use of computers and mobile phones to communicate has a negative impact on their reading and writing skills.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Sample Band 8 Essay

The increasing use of computers and mobile phones among young people for communication has raised concerns regarding its impact on their reading and writing skills. While some people believe that this trend negatively affects literacy skills, I side with those who argue that it offers new avenues for language development.

One concern is that digital communication has introduced a simplified form of language that includes abbreviations, slang, and emojis, which may diverge from traditional language skills. As a result, young people often rely on this informal style of language even in formal settings. Additionally, the quick, bite-sized nature of digital content might negatively affect the attention span required for in-depth reading and understanding. This could potentially weaken this generation’s formal writing skills, which are crucial for academic and professional success.

However, these drawbacks are balanced by significant benefits. The digital era has led to an increase in the quantity and diversity of reading and writing. Young individuals come across various forms of text online, which exposes them to different language styles and vocabulary. The interactive nature of digital platforms also encourages active engagement with text, fostering improved language skills. Moreover, digital communication equips young people with a different set of language skills, such as being able to effectively and concisely convey information. They are also better able to read between the lines to decipher the deeper meanings of a text conversation.

In conclusion, while the informal nature of digital communication poses challenges to traditional reading and writing skills, it also offers opportunities for developing a broader set of literacy skills. I believe that the negative influence of digital devices on young users' language skills is insignificant compared to the benefits they bring.

Writing Task 2

This writing task 2 question has been recently seen in IELTS in India. The essay below is a good example of a Band 8 response.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some countries invest a significant amount of money in promoting the use of bicycles.

Why do you think this is the case? Does it have a positive or a negative impact on individuals and the society?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Sample Band 8 Essay
Environmental concerns and health awareness are increasingly at the forefront of public policy, motivating countries to invest heavily in promoting the use of bicycles. It seems to me that this move benefits almost every member of society and, therefore, the investment is justified.

One obvious reason for this investment is the growing recognition of the environmental benefits associated with cycling. Bicycles, as a clean and green mode of transportation, significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to motor vehicles. Cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen, for instance, have successfully reduced their carbon footprint by implementing extensive cycling infrastructure and encouraging residents to cycle regularly. This shift improves local air quality, making cities more livable and sustainable, while simultaneously contributing to global efforts against climate change.

The promotion of cycling has a profoundly positive impact on public health. Regular bike riding is known to improve cardiovascular health, reduce stress, and enhance overall physical fitness. In Japan, where cycling is currently widely promoted, the population experienced a noticeable decrease in obesity rates and associated health problems. This improvement in public health not only enhances individual quality of life but also eases the burden on public healthcare systems, as a healthier population requires less medical intervention.

In conclusion, the investment in promoting bicycle use by some countries is a strategic response to environmental and health challenges. This approach not only aids in combating climate change and enhancing air quality but also promotes a healthier society. Despite potential initial challenges, the long-term benefits for individuals and society are significant, making this investment a positive and essential step towards a sustainable future.

Writing Task 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The diagram below shows a fire exit plan in a college accommodation.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

You should write at least 150 words.

The diagram illustrates the fire exit route for residents in a college accommodation in the event of a fire.

It can be clearly seen that the fire exit plan is strategically designed with two separate routes leading to distinct meeting points to ensure a quick and organised evacuation.

The layout of the college accommodation shows seven bedrooms, a corridor, and two staircases, with one of them located at the western end of the building and the other adjacent to the lift in the central part of the building.

Since the list is not to be used in case of a fire, occupants of bedrooms 1, 2, and 3 are directed to use the western staircase to exit the building. After descending the stairs, they are to gather at Meeting Point 1, which is located outside on the western side of the accommodation. In contrast, residents of bedrooms 4, 5, 6, and 7 are instructed to head towards the staircase on the northern side of the building. Those from bedrooms 4 and 5 have direct access to this staircase, whereas individuals from bedrooms 6 and 7 need to walk down the corridor to reach it. Upon exiting, they should gather at Meeting Point 2 located outside the building in close proximity to the staircase.
