A Proud product of Carey College…
L. V. Douglas began his boxing career at the age of 14, carrying the proud spirit of Carey College, Colombo one of the city’s oldest private schools into the national ring.
His journey from a determined schoolboy to a respected veteran boxer is marked by discipline, resilience, and a string of victories that earned him recognition across Sri Lanka.
Career Highlights
1955 – At 14, announced himself with early victories.
1957 – Stubbs’ Shield Meet (Under 80 lbs), Francis Jayawardene Challenge Cup.
1960 – Winner at Low Country vs. Up Country Meet (Under 100 lbs);
Represented Ceylon at Indo‑Ceylon Meet in India defeating India’s S. Chatterjee on points.
1961 – Stubbs’ Shield Meet (Under 120 lbs),
T. B. Jayah Challenge Cup winner at Indo‑Ceylon Meet in Ceylon.
1962 – Most Scientific Boxer of the Meet (Under 126 lbs), T. Y. Wright Challenge Cup; victorious at Low Country vs. Up Country Meet.
1963 – Golden year: Stubbs’ Shield Meet (Under 135 lbs),
A.B.A. Novices Meet (Under 132 lbs), Clifford Cup Meet (Under 132 lbs),
Defeated India’s S. Bhosle in a celebrated welterweight clash and. praised for “excellent footwork and intelligent punching.”

Douglas’s career spanned nearly a decade of consistent victories and national representation. More than the trophies, his legacy lies in the inspiration he gave to young athletes showing that discipline, perseverance, and pride in one’s school and country can carry a boxer far.
