🕛 10 minutes to midnight.
30.12.2025 - a day we’ll remember at LEAP Inc.

We played superhero games today.
Not just for fun, but to help children work together.

They spoke about their good qualities,
their not-so-good ones,
and what they’re still learning.

They practised
teamwork,
waiting patiently,
trying again when it didn’t work,
and enjoying success together.

Hot chocolate and cup-o-cake made it easier .
sharing, helping, laughing, finishing together.
Every child took part.
Every child belonged.

No labels.
No pressure.
Just children learning about themselves - as a team.

That’s a day done right. 💛

Midday at home looks a little different today. 🤍
The house is unusually quiet.
One child is asleep, resting and recovering, while the afternoon light falls on my notebook, mug, and pen.

When a child is unwell, the world slows down- and that pause is important.
Psychologically, rest and emotional safety are just as healing as medicine.
Children don’t only recover through treatment, but through feeling held, understood, and unhurried.

While my child sleeps, I’m working quietly - writing counselling briefs and reports, and planning holiday workshops for children.
Even during school holidays, counselling sessions continue, and so does my work in educational therapy for children with learning disabilities.

These holiday workshops are thoughtfully designed to support children’s inner growth, building confidence, emotional regulation, focus, and self-belief, especially for children who need learning to feel safe and encouraging.

To parents reading this:
Slowing down does not mean falling behind.
Sometimes, the most powerful support we give our children is space, patience, and presence.

Tell us - how are you holding space for your children today? 🤍

📖 The Learning Gap Starts Early

Some children write with confidence. Others stare at the same page — not because they can’t learn, but because their preschool didn’t prepare them the same way.

Yesterday, during a Parliamentary Sub-Committee meeting on Educational Reform, Prime Minister and Minister of Education Dr. Harini Amarasuri announced that a unified national preschool curriculum will be implemented across all preschools in Sri Lanka starting in 2027.

🤝This means - no more unequal beginnings. One standard. One system. One foundation for every child.

As a counsellor and educational therapist, I see daily how these early gaps affect children’s confidence and progress.
This reform gives every child -from every background a - a fair, equal start in learning and life.

Many parents tell me, “My child finds it so hard to focus.”
The truth is, focus isn’t built overnight - it develops through practice.

In this session, a child built a house out of magnetic tiles 🏠. What may seem like simple play actually strengthens:
👉🏻 Planning and sequencing
👉🏻 Attention to detail
👉🏻 Patience and persistence
👉🏻 Creative problem-solving

When children are absorbed in building, they practice staying with a task until it’s complete - a skill that translates into better focus for school and daily life.

That’s exactly what we nurture at 🧠 My Super Brain workshops: fun, hands-on activities designed to build concentration, creativity, and confidence in children ages 5 - 12.

When Homework Help Becomes a Trust Issue: ChatGPT and Teen Safety

Dear Parents,

I write to you today with a heavy yet urgent message. As educational counselors, we guide our teens, but this time, guidance failed them. Two heart-wrenching stories have emerged about young lives lost, both involving AI chatbots that were initially used for homework support:

Case 1: Adam Raine, Age 16 (California, USA)
• Started innocently: Adam began using ChatGPT in September 2024 to help with school assignments.
• Developed dependency: Over several months, he used the AI to discuss personal interests and then mental health struggles. By April 11, 2025, his parents discovered he had died by su***de.
• The alleged failure of support: Court documents claim ChatGPT provided Adam with technical guidance on su***de methods (e.g., how to tie knots), helped draft su***de notes, validated his emotional isolation, and even minimized his ties to his family, rather than directing him to real help.

Case 2: Stein-Erik Soelberg (Greenwich, Connecticut, USA)
• A tragic unraveling: Soelberg, a former executive with a history of mental illness, developed a delusional relationship with ChatGPT, naming it “Bobby.” The AI reportedly validated paranoid beliefs about his mother, leading to a deadly murder-su***de. Both he and his mother were found dead on August 5, 2025.

A Crucial Reminder for All Parents:

1. AI is not a mental health professional
While it can assist with exam prep or language, it’s not trained to support emotional crises. Even worse, long conversations can degrade its safety mechanisms.
2. Emotional dependency is real and dangerous
These chatbots can feel deeply empathetic but lack human discernment. Vulnerable teens may see them as confidants. When, in reality, there’s no one on the other side to care or intervene.
3. Technology must be paired with supervision
OpenAI has announced upcoming features such as parental controls, crisis detection, one-click emergency access, and therapist referrals, but these are not yet active.
4. Open communication is non-negotiable
Encourage your teens to share feelings openly with you, with trusted adults, or professional counsellors, not just an AI. Monitor any shifts in behavior or mood, especially around increased use of chatbots.

In conclusion, while AI tools like ChatGPT can be helpful for academics, they must not become emotional substitutes, especially for vulnerable teens. Let’s commit to open dialogue, professional support, and mindful oversight to keep our children safe.

Your concerned counselor,
Rizka Ismath
