Dengue virus spreading rapidly: GMOA urges Govt to act fast

The World Mosquito Eradication Program is doing fantastic work with their Wolbachia bacteria. Mosquitoes are infected and released with this bacteria. It is passed on in nature to the following generations and soon most mosquitoes would carry the bacteria. It prevents them from being able to transmit the dengue virus to other people, even if they get infected. In order to do this they are using hundreds of the Biogents mosquito traps! This has now been introduced to Sri Lanka.
The Biogents trap is the GOLD STANDARD trap, for catching the aedes mosquito; the one that is used for scientific research and programs.

Dengue out breaks are cyclical:
In Sri Lanka, there will always be a rise from May to September and then a second spike around December and January. This is due to the weather and seasons. Breeding tends to explode soon after the heavy rains have subsided. During the heavy rain, mosquito larvae are often washed right out of containers and gutters. Intermittent rains are conducive to breeding.
Also: if there was a bad year for dengue, the following year will be better (as much of the population has become immune to that particular virus). The year after, however, a new virus hits the country and the epidemic becomes worse again. This year, I’m afraid, it’s worse.
DENGUE EPIDEMICS COME IN WAVES.
Dengue on the rise
“During the past few months, an increasing trend in the number of dengue cases have been reported in Sri Lanka”, the WHO announced in July this year after it observed a disturbing tendency and a possibility of a sudden spike in dengue.
