I had the opportunity to facilitate a professional development session on “Managing Student Behavior in the Classroom” for the teachers at the Gampaha Branch of Royal Institute International School.
This interactive session focused on practical, evidence-based strategies to help teachers create positive, supportive learning environments. The key areas covered included:
* Understanding behaviour as communication
* Positive classroom behaviour management strategies
* Using the ABC (Antecedent–Behaviour–Consequence) model to document behavioural concerns and maintain accurate records
* Developing effective behaviour support plans
* Responding to challenging behaviours effectively
* Effective communication with parents regarding behavioural concerns
* When and how to refer students to the school counsellor
We also had an open discussion where teachers shared the challenges they encounter in their classrooms and explored practical, collaborative solutions. It was encouraging to see such meaningful engagement and a shared commitment to supporting students’ social, emotional, and behavioural wellbeing.
Student behaviour is often a form of communication. By understanding the underlying needs behind behaviours, educators can respond with empathy, consistency, and evidence-based interventions that promote both learning and wellbeing.
A heartfelt thank you to all the teachers for their active participation, thoughtful discussions, and dedication to creating positive learning environments where every child can thrive. I also extend my sincere appreciation to the school leadership for supporting initiatives that strengthen teacher capacity and promote student wellbeing.
At Learning Pace, we are committed to empowering educators, supporting families, and promoting student wellbeing through evidence-based training, counselling, and educational support.
