The bellow table clearly shows that Sri Lanka one of the poor countries with low GDP have too many military personnel per 1000 population. 

Every year military expenses continue to increase and the military is mainly located in the North and East to control the ethnic groups. As stated in the UN Human Rights Council unless the government resolve the grievances of all ethnic groups and reduce the defense expenditure, country's economy will go further downwards. Already approximately 7 million people about 1/3 of the population go to bed with hunger and even the life saving medicines are not available in the hospitals.
