The Career Guidance Unit of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo, successfully organized a Lunch Time Talk on SDG 11 – "Sustainable Cities and Communities" on 19th June 2026 for BAMS and BUMS undergraduates. The session was conducted by Mrs. Iresha Sanjeewani, Fairtrade Country Coordinator, on the topic "How Fairtrade Contributes to Economic, Social and Environmental Sustainability."
The programme was conducted as an interactive onsite dialogue from 12.15 p.m. to 1.15 p.m at Mini Auditorium – FIM. Approximately 60 participants, including undergraduate students and academic staff members, attended the session. The discussion enhanced participants' understanding of sustainable development, ethical trade practices and the social, economic and environmental impacts of Fairtrade, while encouraging them to contribute towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in their future professional and personal lives.
The event was organized under the patronage of Prof. SP Molligoda, Dean of the Faculty. It was coordinated by Dr. (Mrs.) R.H.S.K. De Silva – Former Coordinator, CGU and Dr. (Mrs.) S. Weerasekara - Secretary – CGU, Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo.

INAUGURATION OF FOUR CERTIFICATE COURSES - Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo
The Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo, ceremonially inaugurated four certificate courses on 01 August 2026 at the Mini Auditorium of the Faculty. It marked the commencement of four new certificate programme intakes, with around 90 new participants, aimed at enhancing professional knowledge and practical skills in complementary healthcare disciplines.
The newly inaugurated programmes were:
• Certificate Course in Acupuncture (3rd Intake)
• Certificate in Herbal Cosmetic Product Development (4th Intake)
• Certificate Course in Yoga Therapy (7th Intake)
• Certificate Course in Massage Therapy (12th Intake)
The ceremony commenced with the National Anthem, followed by the traditional lighting of the oil lamp. The welcome address was delivered by Professor A.P.A. Jayasiri, Head of the Department of Ayurveda Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics and Community Medicine. The gathering was then addressed by Professor S.P. Molligoda, Dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, who warmly welcomed the new entrants and emphasized the faculty’s continued commitment to providing quality professional education through certificate programmes that respond to emerging healthcare needs.
A guest address was delivered by Mr. Buddhika Hewawasam, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, who highlighted the growing importance of wellness tourism and the increasing demand for professionally trained practitioners in complementary healthcare fields.
The programme also featured a guest address by Dr. L.D.A.M. Arawwawala, Director of the Pharmaceutical Laboratory, Industrial Technology Institute (ITI), who joined the ceremony virtually via Zoom. In her address, she emphasized the importance of scientific research, quality assurance, and innovation in herbal product development, while encouraging participants to integrate evidence-based practices into Indigenous Medicine.
Following the guest speeches, handbooks were distributed to newly enrolled participants. The ceremony concluded with the Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. W.A.S.S. Weerakoon, Head of the Department of Ayurveda Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology and Gynaecology, Obstetrics and Paediatrics, followed by refreshments. An orientation programme for the newly enrolled students was conducted thereafter.
The Faculty of Indigenous Medicine extends its sincere congratulations to all new entrants and wishes them every success in their academic and professional journeys. Through these certificate programmes, the faculty continues its mission of promoting lifelong learning, professional excellence, and the advancement of Indigenous Medicine and complementary healthcare in Sri Lanka.

Short Video Competition Successfully Concluded to Commemorate World Environment Day 2026
The Department of Ayurveda Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics and Community Medicine, in collaboration with the Environmental Committee of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo, successfully organized a Short Video Competition to commemorate World Environment Day 2026 under the theme "Protecting Nature for a Sustainable Future."
The competition aimed to foster environmental awareness, promote sustainable practices, and encourage creativity through digital storytelling. Initially planned exclusively for students of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, the competition was later expanded to welcome participants from other universities in response to the enthusiastic interest received. The event attracted a diverse range of creative and informative video submissions addressing environmental conservation, biodiversity protection, waste management, climate action, and sustainable living.
The submissions were evaluated on 1st August 2026 by a distinguished panel of judges:
•Mr. Palitha K. Wijesinghe – Former Director (Human Resources), National Rupavahini Corporation, with over 30 years of experience in television production and videography; Visiting Lecturer, MSc in Mass Media Communication, University of Kelaniya.
•Dr. N. D. Kodithuwakku – Senior Lecturer, Department of Ayurveda Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics and Community Medicine, Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo.
•Mr. Ruwan Kohombakanda – Senior IT Instructor, Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo.
The videos were assessed based on their relevance to the competition theme, originality, creativity, scientific accuracy, technical quality, presentation, and overall impact.

An award ceremony was held at the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine to recognize the outstanding performances of the winners. In addition to recognizing the winners of the Short Video Competition, Certificates of Appreciation were presented during the award ceremony to the participants of the Street Drama organized on 12 June 2026 as part of the Faculty's World Environment Day commemorative activities. The Department extends its sincere appreciation to all participants for their enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment to promoting environmental sustainability through innovative visual communication.
The organizing committee also expresses its heartfelt gratitude to the panel of judges for their valuable time, expertise, and impartial evaluation, which greatly contributed to the success of the competition.
The Faculty of Indigenous Medicine remains committed to promoting environmental consciousness and encouraging community engagement through educational and creative initiatives that contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.

Faculty of Indigenous Medicine Celebrates Continued Growth at the Inauguration of the 2026/2027 Postgraduate Diploma Programmes
The Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo, proudly inaugurated its Postgraduate Diploma Programmes for the Academic Year 2026/2027 on 3rd July 2026 at the Faculty Main Auditorium, welcoming around 150 new postgraduate scholars.
The ceremony was graced by Professor I. M. Karunathilake, Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo, as the Chief Guest, and Mrs. Deepthi Sumanasena, Commissioner General of Ayurveda, as the Guest of Honor. The event was further honored by the presence of Professor S. P. Molligoda, Dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, Dr. Parakrama Hemachandra, Director of the Ayurveda National Hospital, Dr. Champika Peris, Director of the Bandaranayake Memorial Ayurveda Research Institute, Dr. Saman Opatha, Chief medical officer- Pharmacy, Ayurveda National Hospital, along with Heads of Departments, Course Coordinators, members of the academic and administrative staff, and other distinguished guests.
This year's intake comprises scholars enrolled in the following programmes:

The ceremony celebrated the remarkable growth of the Faculty's Postgraduate and Mid-Career Development Unit. What began in 2023 with a single postgraduate diploma programme and 19 students has grown steadily over the years. Following an enrolment of 62 students in 2024 and the successful graduation of 69 students across five postgraduate diploma programmes in 2025, the faculty now proudly welcomes around 150 scholars for the 2026/2027 academic year—marking another significant milestone in postgraduate education in Indigenous Medicine.
A special highlight of the event was the unveiling of the first newsletter of the Postgraduate and Mid-Career Development Unit by the Vice Chancellor. The publication reflects the Unit's commitment to sharing its academic programmes, research, training opportunities, achievements, and initiatives that contribute to lifelong learning and professional excellence.
The inauguration ceremony concluded on a vibrant note with captivating cultural performances by the Faculty's undergraduate students, celebrating the beginning of a new academic journey.
