🤖✍️ What happens when students use gen AI tools to learn new information?

A new study from Cambridge University Press & Assessment and Microsoft Research reveals that note-taking remains critical for learning, while AI is complementary, helping them to explore and engage with topics.

Cambridge senior researcher and first author Pia Kriejkes said: “We know that students are using chatbots and other AI tools, including to help them with their schoolwork. However, there has been very limited research on how LLM use influences students’ ability to understand and remember information. Our study shows that students enjoyed using AI chatbots, but note taking was more effective for learning outcomes.”

The research, involving over 400 students aged 14–15 across seven schools in England, is one of the first randomised classroom experiments on how LLMs affect students’ comprehension and retention.

Results suggest that either making notes or making notes combined with using an are better than using an LLM alone for helping students understand and remember new information.
