⚡️ Economic Alert: Oil Hits $110
The global economy is feeling the heat. As conflict tightens its grip on the Strait of Hormuz, we are seeing a direct hit to our wallets and markets.
The Quick Breakdown:
• 🛢️ Oil Shock: Prices are pushing $110/barrel, making everything from shipping to travel more expensive.
• 📈 Inflation Spike: New data shows wholesale prices (PPI) rising faster than expected. It’s a “Double Whammy” of high costs and slower growth.
• 💰 Safe Havens: Investors are moving money into Gold to protect against the chaos.

How can a conflict thousands of kilometers away affect the economy of Sri Lanka?
Recent geopolitical tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran highlight how conflicts in one region can create economic ripple effects across the world, including in Sri Lanka.
As a small open economy that relies heavily on international trade, Sri Lanka is particularly vulnerable to global disruptions.
Key potential impacts include:
• Rising global oil prices – Sri Lanka depends entirely on imported fuel to meet national demand. Increases in global oil prices can raise transportation and production costs, contributing to higher inflation and a higher cost of living.
• Foreign employment and remittances – Foreign remittances reached $6.57 billion in 2024, making them a major source of foreign exchange. Instability in the Middle East may affect employment opportunities for Sri Lankan workers and future remittance inflows.
• Tourism and global trade – According to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, tourism earnings reached $2.17 billion in 2024. Geopolitical instability may reduce global travel confidence and influence Sri Lanka’s future balance of payments.
As business management students, understanding how geopolitical developments influence domestic and global markets is essential for making informed economic and business decisions.
What are your thoughts on how global conflicts affect small open economies like Sri Lanka?
