Thaai Kizhavi: The Godmother

The recent Tamil film Thaai Kizhavi: The Godmother caught my attention with its intriguing premise. The story centres on Pavunuthaayi, an aged and feared moneylender in a village. The film opens on a light, humorous note with familiar Tamil comedy elements that appeal to a mass audience. However, the tone shifts when Pavunuthaayi falls seriously ill. Her estranged sons and son-in-law return home—not out of affection, but in anticipation of her death. In fact, the entire village seems to be waiting for the same.

Things take an interesting turn when they discover that she has hidden a stash of gold. Their attitudes quickly change, and they begin desperately trying to keep her alive, hoping to uncover its location.

What truly stood out to me, however, was the film’s underlying message of women’s empowerment. Through Suruli’s reflections on her mother—especially how she was encouraged to be independent and pursue education—the film delivers a meaningful message. Although the ending feels slightly didactic, it still leaves a strong impression, urging women not to depend entirely on others but to shape their own lives with courage.

Overall, it is both entertaining and thought-provoking—a film that manages to balance humour with a meaningful message.
