Orangutans are great apes native to the rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia. They are now found only in parts of Borneo and Sumatra, but during the Pleistocene they ranged throughout Southeast Asia and South China. Classified in the genus Pongo, orangutans were originally considered to be one species.

From 1996, they were divided into two species: the Bornean orangutan and the Sumatran orangutan. A third species, the Tapanuli orangutan, was identified definitively in 2017. The orangutans are the only surviving species of the subfamily Ponginae, which diverged genetically from the other hominids (gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans) between 19.315.7 million years ago.

As of the IUCN Red List, Orungotuns are considered as critically endangered species in the list of threatened species.

World Wildlife Day is an opportunity to celebrate the many beautiful and varied forms of wild fauna and flora and to raise awareness of the conservation status of some of the most critically endangered species of wildlife, to drive discussions towards imagining and implementing solutions to conserve them.

On October 30, we celebrate World Lemur Day to raise awareness about one of the world’s most endangered animals, the “jewel of Madagascar” – lemurs! Here are some facts about lemurs, why they are important and how to help them.

65 millions years ago, the ancestors of lemurs arrived from the African mainland to Madagascar by natural floating raft 65 million years ago. The creatures evolved and adapted to various ecosystems, which have led to a diverse array of lemurs that live in a wide range of habitats. Lemurs such as the Simpona, Propithecus candidus, live only in the high altitude rainforest of northern Madagascar. The Maki and Lemur catta live mainly in the thorny forests of southwestern Madagascar and the Alaotra lake hapalemur lives in the marshes and bamboos of the Alaotra lake.

Lemurs are important in maintaining the balance of Madagascan ecosystems and the growth of plants and trees. They are considered the “creators of the forest,” fuelling the growth of plants in Madagascan forests. As fruit-lovers, they cannot digest fruit seeds; when lemurs travel throughout forests, they spread the seeds through their droppings which act as natural fertilisers. These seeds grow into new trees, which offer shelter and food for a wide variety of animals such as snakes, chameleons and lemurs themselves.

World Sawfish Day 2021

The Sawfish is one of the world's most endangered saltwater fish species. About five species of Cartilaginous fish in Pristidae family have been identified, three of which are Narrow sawfish, Dwarf Sawfish and Green Sawfish, endemic to the Indo-Pacific Oceanas. Largetooth Sawfish inhabits the Indo-Pacific as well as the Eastern Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Smalltooth Sawfish lives only in the shallow Ocean regions of the Atlantic , But occasionally can be recorded in freshwater aswell. They mature sexually between the ages of seven and ten, and the females produce live pups, not eggs. Although they are called sawfish, they are actually a species of ray fish.

"කිසිම දවසක ජංගම දුරකතන තම දරුවන්ගේ ආයම්මලා කරන්නට එපා" යැයි කීවේ ලංකාවෙන් ගොස් ඇමරිකාවේ සිලිකන්වැලි දිග් විජය කළ මුහුණූ පොත සකස් කළ මුල් කණ්ඩායමේ සිටි චමත් පළිහපිටිය ය.
එහෙත් අද සිදුව ඇත්තේ එයම නොවේ ද? ඔබේත් මගෙත් දරුවා අද සුහුරු ජංගම දුරකතනයේ ගොදුරක්බවට පත්ව තිබෙන බව අසත්‍යයක් නොවේ.ඉන් අපේ දරු පරපුර රැක ගත යුතුව ඇත.

තවමත් එකළොස් හැවිරිදි අපේ ගගනගේ කතාව වැදගත් වන්නේ ඒ නිසා ය.ගගන ලංකාවේ සිටින කීර්තිමත් වනජීවී ප්‍රවීණයන් යුවළකගේ බාල පුතණූවන් ය.ඔහු ද ඔබේත් මගෙත් දරුවන්සේම පසුගිය දිනවල සිටියේ නිවෙස තුළ කොටුවෙලා ය.එහෙත් ගගන පරිසරයට නිරාවණය කළ දරුවෙකි.
ගගන ඒ අනුව වැඩිය නැඹුරු වුයේ නිවස අවට පරිසරය විදින්නට ය.වත්තල සිය නිවසට යාබඳව කඩා වැටීමට ආසන්න පුවක් ගසකි.එහි එකම ගිරා ජනපදයකි.මෙන්ඩිස්ගේ දරුවන්ගේ නෙත් නතර වුයේ ගිරා දරුවන් මානයේ ය.එහි අවසානය වුයේ පුංචි ගගන ලොව අංක එකේ වනජීවී ඡායාරූප තරගය වන
"wildlife photographer of the year"හි වයස 10න් පහළ කාණ්ඩයේ ජුරියේ විශේෂ පැසසුමට ලක්වන ආකාරයේ ඡායාරූපයක හිමිරුකවෙකු බවට පත් විම ය.
මේ කතාවෙන් පැහැදිලි වන සත්‍යයක් තිබේ.ඒ ඔබේ කුඩා ගෙවත්තේ පවා දරුවන්ට නිරීක්ෂණය කළ හැකි දෑ රැසක් තිබෙන බව ය.
එපමණක් ද නොව මේ අසිරු කාලයේ දී දරුවන්ට
පරිගණකය සහ ජංගම දුරකතනයට වඩා ළං කර දිය යුත්තේ කැරම්,දාම් හා චෙස් වැනි ක්‍රීඩාවන් ය.ඔබට විවේක හැම මොහොතේම ඔවුන් සමග එවැනි
ක්‍රීඩාවල යෙදීමට හැකි නම් එහි වටිනාකම මිල කළ නොහැකි ය.
නැතිනම් පොත් පත් ඔවුන්ගේ මිතුරන් කළ යුතුය.විද්‍යුත් මාර්ගයෙන් හෝ පොත් කියවන එක හුරු කළ යුතුය.ඒවා සියල්ලම කළ යුත්තේ දරුවන් සමග මිතුරු ලීලාවකිනි.එය ඇත්ත හදවතේ මිතුරුකමක් විය යුතුය.
එලෙසම අධ්‍යාපන බලධාරීන්ට ද මේ වකවානුවේ වැදගත් කාර්ය භාරයක් පැවරී තිබේ.ඒ දරුවන්ගේ
විභාග හා සෙසු යෝග්‍යතා පරීක්ෂණ කල් නොදමා වෙනත් ක්‍රම ඔස්සේ හෝ පැවැත්වීම ය.ලෝකයේ ඇතැම් රටවල විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයට ඇතුලත් කිරීමේ විභාග පවා එම සිසුන්ගේ ශිෂ්‍ය ඇගයීම් වාර්තාවන්ට අනුව සිදු කර තිබේ.එහෙත් අපේ ගුරුවරු වේතන ප්‍රශ්නයකට වැඩ වරා සිටිති.එම සටන සාධාරණ වුවත් මේ එයට අවස්ථාව නොවන බව මාගේ හැගීමයි.රාජපක්ස රජයට ද සියලුම දහජරා වැඩට මුදල් ඇති මුත් ගුරුවරුන්ගේ වැටුප් වැඩි කිරීමට පණක්ම මුදල් නැති බවම කියයි.මේ සියල්ල වැරදි ය.මේවායින් තැලෙන්නේ මේ අනාගතය භාර ගන්නට සිටින අපේ දරුවන් ය.
ඇත්තටම දරුවන් මල් වගේ ය.ඒ මල්වලට නිදහසේ පිපෙන්නට ඉඩ දිය යුතුය.අප කළ යුත්තේ ඒවා වනසන්නට එන අයගෙන් ඒ මල් බේරා ගැනීම පමණී.

A New Species Of Large Gecko Found From The Central Highlands Of Sri Lanka.

A new species of large gecko has been discribed of the genus Hemidactylus from the southern face peneplain foothills of Sri Lanka. This new species is recorded and published by Mr.Sameera Karunarathna and his team. This species is named as Hemidactylus kimbulae and this species of Gecko is only know from its type locality near the Kalthota Duuwili Alla Area. And this is the second largest gecko species found in Sri Lanka. An adult reaching an length of almost 1 ft. Species Endemic To Sri Lanka.

The Wildlife Association Of Ananda College Congratulate Gagana Wickramasinghe on receiving a Highly Commented Award at the Wildlife Photographer Of The Year Competition 2021 in the 10 Years and Under Category. This competition was conducted by the Natural History Museum Of London. This is the 1st time a 10 year old Young individual has been selected from Sri Lanka in an International level photographic competition such as this.
