What skills do I need to become a caregiver?
You are likely to be working with people who are not in the best state of health and who need emotional as well as physical support. You must enjoy working with people who are in need of care such as people who are confused, depressed, in pain, stressed or emotional. You should be able to maintain a positive outlook and respond to your clients with empathy and understanding.
People who have physical difficulties may need more time to do simple tasks and you must show them patience and an awareness of their limitations. It is also important that you are good at communicating as you will be talking to the client, who may have trouble with their own communication and may not see and talk to many other people. You will also need to talk to the client's family, and you could be working as part of a team of healthcare providers who need to be updated on the client's condition.

The clients of a caregiver can be elderly, frail, ill, injured or have a physical or mental disability. A caregiver could work in the home of their client or in a care facility where they help the client to live as comfortably as possible by helping them with bathing and bathroom functions, personal grooming, feeding or acting as a companion so that the client is not alone. The role of a caregiver is essential to helping certain populations live a comfortable and functional life.
