Ananda National College Chilaw established on 1950/05/12 by Sri Bolagala Silalankara Thero. Our school is the leading Buddhist school in the Puttalam district with an excellent track record in education and discipline over the past 71 years. Currently, this school caters to about 3500 students in the area. DETAILS OF THE SCHOOL HISTORY

1949: Buddhist students were denied school entry after a Wesa

k "sil" program.
1949: Commencement of an English class with three students at "Maha Mahendra" hall.
12.05.1950: Birth of Ananda National School at Sri Vijayarama temple.
12.05.1950: Rt. Dickwela Piyananda Thero assumed the post of the first principal.
01.06.1951: Registered as a school of the Colombo Buddhist Theosophical Society.
27.12.1952: Established in the present premises on an eight-acre land.
27.12.1952: All Island Buddhist Association anniversary and holy relics exhibition held.
05.01.1953: Opening of a student hostel in a temporary cadjan shed.
01.07.1953: Mr. Wijesundara took over as principal.
03.04.1954: First Inter House Sportsmeet held (Ashoka, Tissa, and Vijaya houses).
17.02.1955: Formation of the Buddhist Students' Association.
09.10.1955: Institution of the Chilaw Workers Buddhist Association.
1955: Emergence of literary societies, English clubs, and "Anandodaya" magazine.
17.02.1956: Opening of the newly constructed hall by Mudliyar Mr. Senanayake.
14.06.1956: First anniversary of the Sinhala Students' Association and oratory contests.
28.06.1956: First anniversary of the English Students' Association and oratory contests.
04.01.1960: Initiation of the primary section by Rt. Nattandiye Siri Nivasa Thero.
1960: Construction of the tiled office building through "Ananda Mela" funds.
1966: Beginning of the School Cadet Corps and the Past Pupils' Association.
12.06.1967: Death of student Sunil Hemawansha Abeysekara in a shramadana accident.
12.08.1967: Construction of Abeysekara Hall and donation of the old shrine room.
1976: Provision of the two-storey Arts Section and Assembly Hall building.
1976: Inception of the Advanced Level Science Section.
1979: Composition of the school song and beginning of the Scouts Campaign.
01.03.1984: Initiation of the Special Education Unit for the deaf.
01.10.1984: Inauguration of the "Swashakthi" Hall.
15.09.1989: Shifting of the Special Education Unit to a new building.
09.09.1992: Assignment of the two-storey building for the A/L Computer Room.
08.01.1999: Upgrading of Ananda Maha Vidyalaya to Ananda National College.
1999: Construction of A/L Laboratory, Canteen, Internet Library, and Commerce Hall.
04.07.2006: Opening of the new Special Education Unit building.
14.07.2006: Functioning of the Special Education Unit in its modern facility.
04.04.2007: Placement of the Buddha Statue in the new shrine room.
2009: Beginning of the English medium class for Grade 6 students.
2014: First batch of students sat for G.C.E. (O/L) in the English medium.
2015: First school "walk" held in Chilaw city and donation of a school bus.
26.05.2016: Cremation ceremony of Ven. Nattandiye Siri Nivasa Thero at the playground.
20.09.2018: "Ves" and Head Ornaments ceremony for 70 Kandyan dancing students.
2019: Formation of the first Girl Cadet Corps.
13.02.2020: Assignment of the 05-foot wide access road to students.
07.09.2022: 72nd Anniversary celebration and unveiling of the founder's statue.
05.05.2023: Holding of the "Ananda Waishakya Punya Mahothsavaya" ceremony.
05.08.2023: Launch of the "Back to School" programme for past teachers and pupils.
