🌊 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗔𝗶𝗿, & 𝗦𝗼𝗶𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

"Aragonite Saturation State and Coral Reefs Health Assessment in Sri Lanka"

Coral reefs are among the most vulnerable ecosystems facing the combined pressures of climate change, ocean acidification, nutrient pollution, and recurring marine heatwaves. As Sri Lanka is home to ecologically and economically significant reef systems, understanding their present resilience has become increasingly urgent.
In this study, we carried out a nationwide assessment across the Eastern, Southern, Northern, and Western coral reef regions of Sri Lanka to evaluate:
🔹 Aragonite Saturation State (ΩAr) — a key indicator of coral calcification potential
🔹 Nitrate and phosphate enrichment — major nutrient stressors linked to bleaching vulnerability
🔹 Spatial coral bleaching hotspot distribution under ongoing climate stress
Our findings revealed that Sri Lankan reef waters are currently supersaturated with respect to aragonite, suggesting that coral calcification remains favorable at present. However, the study also identified important warning signals:
⚠️ The Northern Coast showed the lowest ΩAr values, indicating increasing sensitivity to future ocean acidification.
⚠️ Elevated nitrate concentrations in Southern and Western reef systems suggest that local anthropogenic nutrient inputs may act as a serious co-stressor during thermal bleaching events.
⚠️ Bleaching hotspot mapping further highlights that climate-driven stress is no longer a distant threat, but an emerging present reality for Sri Lankan reefs.
This work provides an important baseline for national coral reef monitoring, climate adaptation planning, and marine ecosystem conservation in Sri Lanka.

We are proud to see research from the Ecosphere Resilience Research Center featured in The Sunday Times Education Times, bringing attention to an important environmental health issue: microplastic release from nylon tea bags into brewed tea.
Published in the Royal Society of Chemistry Environmental Science: Processes & Impacts, this study used advanced OCT imaging to directly detect and quantify microplastics in tea, highlighting potential consumer exposure risks.
This recognition reflects the strength of collaborative, impact-driven science led by Prof. Meththika Vithanage and the dedicated research team.
Congratulations to all authors on taking Sri Lankan environmental research to the global spotlight.
