Prof. Athula Sumathipala Invited to Deliver Keynote Lectures at the 6th Belt & Road Initiative Global Health International Congress and Leading Academic Forums in China

The Institute for Research and Development in Health and Social Care (IRD) is pleased to announce that its Director, Prof. Athula Sumathipala, has been invited to deliver keynote lectures at leading universities and international conferences in China from 26 June to 1 July 2026.
These invitations recognize his global contributions to public health, twin research methodology, and evidence-based healthcare.
Key Academic Engagements
1. 6th Belt & Road Initiative Global Health International Congress (28 June 2026)
• Representing: Director, Institute for Research and Development in Health and Social Care (IRD), Sri Lanka
• Keynote Address: “Planetary Health: Evidence-Based Practice for a Sustainable Future. Whose Evidence? Bridging the Evidence Gap, Global Divide, and Equity.”
• Focus: Addressing disparities in research evidence and promoting equitable global health policies.
2. Shengjing Maternal and Fetal Medicine Conference (26–27 June 2026)
• Representing: President, International Society for Twin Studies (ISTS)
• Keynote Address: “Advances in Twin Research Methodology & Introduction to the International Society for Twin Studies.”
• Focus: Recent advances in genetics, environmental health, and disease prevention through twin studies.
3. School of Public Health, Peking University (1 July 2026)
• Representing: President, International Society for Twin Studies (ISTS)
• Distinguished Lecture: “Advances in Twin Research Methodology & Introduction to the International Society for Twin Studies.”
• Focus: Contemporary research methodologies and international academic collaboration.
These engagements further strengthen research partnerships between Sri Lanka and China and support international collaboration, evidence-informed healthcare, and capacity building in global health.

Yesterday, we were delighted to welcome Ms. Yalini Shanmuganathan (CEI Coordinator for the DIGIPATHS Project and member of the University of Jaffna DIGIPATHS team) to the Institute for Research and Development (IRD).

The visit focused on strategic planning for Community Engagement and Involvement (CEI) activities within the Western Province.

Today marks exactly one year since the Twin Talent Fest 2025, jointly organized by the Sri Lankan Twin Registry and the Institute for Research and Development in Health and Social Care.

A year ago today twin children and youth from all corners of the island showcased their exceptional talents in singing, dancing, music, and art on a single stage.

Reflecting on those beautiful memories, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors, organizing committee, the loving parents, and all the twin brothers and sisters who dedicated themselves to making that event a success.

We were delighted to welcome Dr. Ruwini Cooray, neuroscientist, entrepreneur, and CEO of NeuroGen, during her visit to IRD on 5 June 2026. A former researcher of the IRD Genetics Laboratory, Dr. Cooray met with our research team to share updates, discuss ongoing work in genetics and molecular biology, and explore opportunities for future collaboration. We look forward to continuing our engagement and advancing impactful scientific research together.

We were delighted to welcome Prof. Sally Hardy, Paul Johnson, and Maddy Johnson to the Institute for Research and Development in Health and Social Care (IRD) on 4 June 2026.

The visit provided an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas, strengthen professional connections, and explore potential avenues for future collaboration in research and global health. We look forward to building on these discussions and fostering meaningful international partnerships that contribute to advancing research and innovation.

සෞඛ්‍ය සහ සමාජ සත්කාර පිළිබද​ පර්යේෂණ සහ සංවර්ධන ආයතනයේ (IRD) කාර්ය මණ්ඩලය විසින් වෙසක් පෝය නිමිත්තෙන් සංවිධානය කරන ලද 'කඩල' දන්සල පසුගිය ජූනි 02 වැනිදා ආයතන පරිශ්‍රයේ දී සාර්ථක ව පැවැත්විණි.

බුද්ධ චරිතය සහ සාධනීය මනෝවිද්‍යාත්මක ආදර්ශය!

බුදුරජාණන් වහන්සේගේ සමස්ත ජීවන චරිතයම මානසික ඔරොත්තු දීමේ හැකියාව (Psychological Resilience) සහ මානව සංවර්ධනය පිළිබඳ ජීවමාන පර්යේෂණාගාරයකි.

මානසික කම්පන කළමනාකරණය (Trauma Management): පටාචාරා, කිසාගෝතමී වැනි දැඩි මානසික කම්පනයට හෝ විෂාදයට (Depression) ලක්වූවන් සාමාන්‍ය සමාජීකරණයට ලක් කිරීමේදී බුදුහිමියන් භාවිත කළේ වත්මන් මනෝචිකිත්සාවේ එන සන්නිවේදන සහ සහකම්පන (Empathy) උපක්‍රමයන්ය. බාහිර ලෝකයේ යථාර්ථය තේරුම් කර දීමෙන් ඔවුන් තුළ ස්වයං-සුවය ලැබීමේ විභවය මතු කිරීමට උන්වහන්සේ ක්‍රියා කළහ.

චර්යාත්මක වෙනස්වීම් (Behavioral Modification): අංගුලිමාල, ආලවක වැනි දරුණු සහ ප්‍රචණ්ඩකාරී පෞරුෂත්වයන් (Antisocial Personality Traits) සහිත පුද්ගලයන්, සමාජයට හිතකර සාමකාමී මිනිසුන් බවට පරිවර්තනය කිරීමට බුදුහිමියන් යොදාගත්තේ දඬුවම හෝ බිය ගැන්වීම නොවේ; චර්යාත්මක වෙනස් කිරීම් සහ ආකල්පමය ප්‍රතිසංස්කරණයන්ය.

විද්‍යාත්මක සහ තාර්කික ප්‍රවේශය (Scientific & Critical Thinking): ඕනෑම කරුණක් ඇසූ පමණින් හෝ පරම්පරාවෙන් ආ පමණින් පිළි නොගෙන, ස්වයං පරීක්ෂණයට හා තාර්කික විශ්ලේෂණයට ලක් කර පිළිගන්නා ලෙස බුදුහිමියන් "කාලාම සූත්‍රය" තුළින් කළ දේශනාව, වත්මන් පර්යේෂණවේදයේ (Research Methodology) මූලික පදනම හා මනාව බද්ධ වේ.

පර්යේෂණාත්මක දෘෂ්ටියකින් වෙසක් දිනය අර්ථවත් කරගැනීම
අද සමාජය මුහුණ දෙන ප්‍රධානතම අභියෝගය වන්නේ මානසික ආතතිය, සාංකාව සහ මිනිසුන් අතර සහකම්පනය ගිලිහී යාමයි. බුදු දහමේ එන සතිමත්භාවය (Mindfulness) සහ මෙත්තා (Loving-kindness) වැනි සංකල්ප මානසික සුවතාව කෙරෙහි ධනාත්මකව බලපාන ආකාරය වත්මන් ස්නායු විද්‍යාත්මක (Neuroscience) පර්යේෂණ මඟින් පවා සනාථ කර ඇත.

එබැවින්, මෙම වෙසක් සමයේ හුදු ආමිස පූජාවන්ට පමණක් සීමා නොවී, බුදුරජාණන් වහන්සේ දේශනා කළ තාර්කික චින්තනය, සහකම්පනය සහ මනෝවිද්‍යාත්මක උපේක්ෂාව අපගේ දෛනික ජීවිතයට සහ පර්යේෂණ කාර්යයන්ට බද්ධ කරගැනීමට අධිෂ්ඨාන කරගනිමු.
