In the spring of 2010, Carla Pescini, now 70, an Italian residing in London, was relaxing on a beach on the eastern Caribbean island of St. Lucia, recharging her batteries after a long British winter and her challenging work as a volunteer in a su***de sanctuary. Little did she know that she was about to embark on an adventure which would change her life.Also on the beach was a young woman accompanied by a lively toddler and two shy and withdrawn teenage girls. Her curiosity piqued, Carla soon discovered that the young woman was a volunteer at Holy Family Center, located on the outskirts of the capital city of Castries, where 17 abandoned, orphaned or abused children were housed in two simple buildings. Although the Catholic nuns were doing their best to provide food and shelter, they were unable to give the individual attention that such damaged children require. In the absence of stimulation and challenge, the children were uncommunicative, sullen and bored.At that moment, Carla decided she could not sit by and do nothing. Lucia’s tourist resort façade without seeing the grim underbelly of life for many of the island’s poorer residents. Lucia’s principal source of revenue had been hard hit by the current recession and crime rates have risen. Some 60% of the 175,000 population are under 18 with no hope of employment or future.
