TVET students presented Prime Minister Hon. Philip J. Pierre with fresh produce and agro-processed products, grown and prepared by the students themselves

Following the Agro Food Processing Showcase 2026, students from the TVET Institute School of Sustainable Agriculture and Culinary Arts met with the Prime Minister, and presented him with a token of their appreciation for his support of TVET education and initiatives promoting food security and local production.

"More bakers, more cakes... I think we can all agree we would be happy with that result."

Abebech Assefa, Head of Cooperation for Canada in the Caribbean, reaffirmed her Government's commitment to the Careers in the Baking Industry Apprenticeship Programme, being run in collaboration with SLCTVET, the Bakers Association Inc., and the Ministry of Commerce.

Canada is supporting the programme with an investment of CAD $181,000 through the Local Engagement and Action Fund - LEAF.

Dr Marie-Louise Felix was the Facilitator for the just-concluded GIZ Implementation Alignment Workshop for “Green and Blue Skills” and “Blue Economy” implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economy Cooperation and Development (BMZ), in cooperation with the CARICOM Secretariat.

Dr Felix left the meeting confident that local and regional agencies in TVET and sustainable development wete more in tune with one another, and that they are poised to enable a more transformative landscape going forward.

SLCTVET participated in the GIZ Implementation Alignment Workshop for the two regional projects “Green and Blue Skills” and “Blue Economy” implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economy Cooperation and Development (BMZ), in cooperation with the CARICOM Secretariat.

Project lead Sabine Klaus explained why this workshop series, which brought together the private and public sector and non-governmental organisations from across the Caribbean, was important.

The Ministry of Commerce and SLCTVET are working with the baking industry to help teach the next generation of Saint Lucian bakers!

Through the CIBI Apprenticeship Programme, 30 interested persons will undergo 12 months of training towards the award of a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Retail Bakery Operations Level I.

If you know people between the ages of 18 and 29, interested in becoming a baker, get them to sign up!
