Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Balamand We prepare students to lead, serve, and make a real impact in healthcare.

Founded in 1995, the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Balamand offers programs in Nursing, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Nutrition, Public Health, and Optometry. The Faculty of Health Sciences is located on three campuses of the University: within the Dekwaneh Campus, Mount Lebanon; on the UOB Main Campus (Al Kurah) near Tripoli; at Souk el Gharb. It offers Freshman courses, Undergraduate BS degrees and Graduate Master of Science degrees. Possibilities are available to complete pre-Medical requirements and Dual undergraduate degrees. English is the main language of instruction; however some degrees are available in both English and in French.

Dear Alumni,

At a time when our world feels increasingly unsettled and uncertainty touches many parts of our region, I write to you with deep concern and heartfelt solidarity.

Our thoughts are with each of you and your families during these difficult days. We sincerely hope that you are safe and protected. The reports and developments unfolding around us remind us of how fragile stability can be, and how quickly daily life can be disrupted.

As members of our University community, you remain an integral part of our extended family, no matter where you are in the world. Please know that we are thinking of you and hoping that calm, stability, and peace will soon prevail across the region.

In times like these, the strength of our community lies in our solidarity, compassion, and shared humanity. We also hope that, where possible and safe to do so, you may extend a helping hand to fellow citizens and support those in distress, reflecting the values of care and responsibility that unite us.

Dr. Abu-Saad Huijer is a full professor and dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Balamand. Prior to that she was the Founding Dean of the School of Nursing at the American University of Beirut.  She is currently appointed Adjunct full professor, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, U.S.A.

Her research endeavors have focused primarily on pain management and palliative care in children and adults. To that effect, she has supervised a large number of PhD dissertations and has been lead investigator on a large number of funded projects in the Netherlands and in Lebanon. She has published more than 300 articles in national & international refereed and professional journals and two books, one of which is on ‘evidence-based palliative care across the life span’. Dr. Abu-Saad Huijer has served on a number of international expert committees, most recent of which is the Lancet Commission on Global Access to Pain Control and Palliative Care.

Dr. Huijer received many awards & recognitions for her research work:

Life Time Achievement Award from the McMillan Cancer Fund in London.

Distinguished researcher award from the Scientific Society of Arab Nursing Faculties.

She was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame.

Awarded the International Association for the Study of Pain Honorary membership.

Received the Princess Mona Regional Award for her significant contributions to the nursing profession.

Received the National Center for Scientific Research career award for her lifetime research achievements.

Received the AAAH (Asia-Pacific Action Alliance on Human Resources for Health) Recognition Award on her work in developing the healthcare workforce.

ranked among the top 2% of researchers worldwide, according to an international study by AD Scientific Index, # 1 at University of Balamand, and Number 12 in Lebanon.

Dr. Huda Abu-Saad Huijer is First International Researcher to Receive the Prestigious Friends of the National Institute for Nursing Research (FNINR) Ada Sue Hinshaw Award. She officially received the award during the FNINR NightinGala, which took place on October 15, 2025, in Washington,
