In conjunction with various regional and international efforts to align architecture and design research with advanced technologies, the department initiated the creation of a fabrication and research unit, ArD TechLab, with the aim of advancing
its resources to supplement progressive student and faculty research. Through TechLab, ArD aims at advancing technological innovation in architecture, by providing state of the art in-house fabrication facilities. Tech Lab is currently located in the Scientific Research Building (SRB) Room 111 basement floor level. It currently houses five Hephestos 3D Printers (located in ArD studios),a small fused deposition modeling 3D printer (FDM) Makerbot Replicator, a Makerbot Digitizer 3D Scanner, a WASP Delta 3D Printer (FDM & Clay extrusion), a Roland monoFab SRM-20 desktop milling machine (Small CNC), a Universal Laser Systems Cutter and a large-scale 3-axis CNC router (Computerized numerical control). The router is used for 2D and 3D cutting of wood, light metals and foam. In addition, the lab maintains an area for model making, with small tools for the use of the students (such as pliers, saws, foam cutters, hand drills, cutting boards and others). The ArD fabrication space is open to all department students, for advanced model making, and managed by a lab instructor and trained students, supported by the faculty’s lab supervisor and managers.
