In order to be able to break the 4th wall on stage, an actor should learn how to respect it first, to adapt to it, and master it , before breaking it, intentionally, when needed in a scene, or when asked by the director.

The 4th wall is a theatrical convention, where actors ignore the audience, focus their attention exclusively on the dramatic world, and remain absorbed in its fiction, in a state that Stanislavski calls "public solitude", or the ability to behave as one would in private, despite, in actuality, being watched intently while so doing, or to be 'alone in public'.
