Applications are now open for the EAP MENA Hub: Managing Resources for the Preservation of Library and Archive Materials workshop.

Organized by the University Library at the American University of Beirut and the British Library’s Endangered Archives Programme Hubs, this free two-day online workshop will explore how archives and libraries can manage resources more effectively to support the preservation of collections.

The workshop is designed for archive and library professionals in the Middle East and North Africa with budgeting, staffing, or other resourcing responsibilities.

World Humanitarian Day, observed globally on August 19, carries particular significance in Lebanon, where people have endured one humanitarian crisis after another.
Here, we highlight the famine in Lebanon during World War I, when American missionaries associated with AUB provided essential humanitarian assistance, including food distribution and soup kitchens, to vulnerable communities across the country.
The images featured here are taken from a report by Bayard Dodge documenting the relief activities of the ‘Abeih and Souk el-Gharb Soup Kitchens during 1915–1916.

This month, we highlight Shifting Grounds: The Ground Between Form and Practice in Beirut, edited by Carla Aramouny and Sandra Frem.

The book looks closely at Beirut’s ground level as a space of everyday life, adaptation, and collective practice. Through four spatial practices, Appropriation, Commoning, Production, and Activism, it explores how people reshape the city in response to urban development, crisis, and changing social needs.

AUB President Fadlo R. Khuri was featured in a special “Qissa w Shakhsiyah” oral history episode marking AUB’s 160th anniversary.
He reflected on his upbringing, medical career, leadership journey, and the challenges of guiding AUB through the pandemic, Lebanon’s economic crisis, and war.
The interview also explored academic freedom, inclusivity, regional growth, student aspirations, and AUB’s future, while offering personal insights into the influence of family, music, and literature.
The episode will be preserved in the AUB Oral History Collection for future generations.

The book examines why Lebanon’s political system has struggled to build a strong, cohesive, and legitimate state. It looks at sectarian power-sharing, institutional weakness, corruption, foreign intervention, and the long-term impact of divided loyalties on governance and stability.
