Department of Chemistry (AUB)

Department of Chemistry (AUB) In October 2001, the Chemistry Department at AUB started the implementation of a new undergraduate curriculum. In June 2004, the first wave of B.Sc. degree.

Besides being in the heart of the Natural Sciences, Chemistry plays a central role in a variety of important areas such as the industry, agriculture, biology, food technology, nutrition, pharmaceuticals, engineering, environmental science and medicine. students following the new course track graduated. The Department focuses on the four major branches of Chemistry namely analytical, organic, inorg

anic and physical chemistry. The program provides you with a strong theoretical background as well as a good practical training that will prepare you to go into any of the above mentioned specializations, or continue your career as a professional chemist. After your graduation with a B.Sc. in Chemistry, you can pursue your higher education in Chemistry at AUB leading you to the Master's (M.Sc.) The Department has an ambitious graduate program and conducts research in all the above-mentioned areas. It used to have a Ph.D. program, which is only temporarily suspended (since 1978, when the last (11th) Ph.D. degree was granted). The Department will present a proposal for restoring the Ph.D. program in December 2005. We are thus full of hope that the program will be soon unfrozen. The Department also prepares you for entering the Medical School at AUB, provided you take required Biology and Physics courses as your electives. Chemistry, along with the other Science Departments at AUB (Biology, Physics and Geology) and the school of Engineering, enjoys the presence of an important core facility, namely the Central Research Science Lab (CRSL), which groups state-of-the-art instruments for use in teaching and research. Social activities are frequent and lively in the Chemistry Department due to the efforts of the "Chemistry Students Society". Junior, senior, and graduate Chemistry students are always the warm-welcoming host of the incoming sophomore students, and the whole group enjoys a cozy atmosphere of friendship, harmony and entertainment, yet side-by-side with studying motivation and perseverant work.

PEER-supported research project of Prof. Antoine Ghauch entitled “Enhancing water quality monitoring and improving water disinfection processes in Lebanon” has been selected by the Center for Development Research at USAID to receive the Stakeholder Analysis (SA)/Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP) for technical assistance through RTAC, the Research Technical Assistance Center serving as a strategic resource to USAID (https://www.rtachesn.org/).
PEER 5-18 project (243 k$) is in collaboration with UC-Berkeley (USG Partner Prof. David Sedlak) and managed by the National Academy of Sciences at Washington DC.
The aim of this SA/SEP award is to set the research team up for success in translating future research outputs into development impact.

A recent publication by Prof. Lara Halaoui and her team (Rida Farhat and Jihan Dhainy) in the prestigious Journal ACS Catalysis on the role of low-coordination surface-Fe of NiFe-oxo/hydroxide on the catalysis of the oxygen evolution reaction.

This work examines by electrochemical measurements a hypothesis that low-coordination Fe on the surface (surface-Fe) of NiFe-oxo/hydroxide promotes catalysis for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) rather than Fe in the bulk structure (bulk-Fe) even in ultrathin films that are mostly surface. The ef...
