Excessive unsupervised use of media can strongly influence teenagers’ ethics, behavior, and decision-making. Teenagers are still developing values such as honesty, respect, responsibility, and self-control. When media use is not guided by parents, teachers, or guardians, adolescents may be exposed to violence, cyberbullying, inappropriate content, misinformation, and unhealthy social pressures.
Research shows that heavy social media use affects teenagers’ moral and emotional development in several ways:
* Teenagers may become less sensitive to violence and aggressive behavior after repeated exposure to violent media.
* Social media can encourage comparison, materialism, and the desire for online approval rather than real-life values.
* Exposure to harmful influencers or unethical online trends may normalize cheating, bullying, disrespect, or risky behavior.
* Constant online interaction may reduce face-to-face communication skills and empathy. Several studies provide evidence of these effects.
Unsupervised media use also affects academic ethics. Teenagers may become more likely to plagiarize, cheat, or avoid responsibilities because of distractions and dependence on digital entertainment. Excessive screen time can reduce concentration, sleep quality, and academic performance.
However, media itself is not completely harmful. Positive and supervised use of media can help teenagers learn new skills, express creativity, and stay connected with others. Experts suggest that moderation, parental guidance, digital literacy education, and time limits are important for healthy media use.
