In February, our students visited the neighborhood of Sabra’s main thoroughfare to look for overlooked traces of inspiration - details most pass without noticing. Guided by , they moved through the streets already familiar to them with a slower, more attentive eye. Along the way they observed fading murals, improvised shop displays, eccentric color palettes, vintage logos, layered posters, tiled storefronts, and decades-old packaging still lining the shelves of neighborhood stores.
Sabra, located in southern Beirut within the Ghobeiry municipality, has long been a place of refuge for displaced communities, particularly Palestinian refugees. For decades its residents have faced high unemployment, largely due to restrictions on working in many professions in Lebanon. Today, the area has again been affected by Israel’s campaign of forced displacement, forcing many residents, generations already displaced once or even twice, to leave their homes yet again.
The visit was an exercise in paying attention to the textures, sounds, shapes, and conversations that shape a neighborhood. It was also a reminder of how quickly the familiar can become fragile, how easily the streets we walk and the storefronts we study can become memories.

Here, life is lived on the edge of uncertainty, where the ordinary rhythms of daily life exist side by side with the possibility that everything can shift overnight.
We hope the residents of Sabra, and of every neighborhood in our beloved southern suburbs, and across the country, will be able to return home safely and soon.

Beirut Street Culture - Bus Tour and Design Research 🚌

On a rainy Saturday in February, our first year students hopped on a guided bus tour across Beirut to learn from the city itself - spotting hidden gems of inspiration and the small, beautiful details most people pass by without noticing. The tour was led by , an Art Director and designer known for her vibrant use of regional popular culture,
Wandering through historic neighborhoods and everyday corners full of character, the students explored Beirut’s layered street culture and visual language up close. From sweet shops, book shops, and beauty salons to storefronts frozen in the 50s and 60s, they took in hand-painted signage, bold typography, window graphics, packaging, patterns, and all the wonderfully informal branding that gives the city its distinctive flair.
The focus was on living the research: tasting, observing, experiencing, and talking about what we see. A reminder that inspiration is everywhere, sometimes you just have to slow down and look a little closer.

The tour was followed by two studio sessions where students translated what they discovered into design ideas, developing personal concepts inspired by local street culture and refining them into thoughtful, confident directions.

Constructing a Classic Tailored Suit: Second-year students model their own tailored suits!
The students’ second year at CSB is where craftsmanship really comes into focus. The curriculum advances into more complex design techniques, with an emphasis on material exploration, refined construction methods, and design innovation.
In their Patternmaking III and Construction III: Tailoring course led by , students dive into the world of classic suit-making, learning how to move between draping, flat pattern drafting, and technical construction. Over the course of the semester, they progress from a 5-piece jacket toile to a full double-breasted jacket, and finally tailored trousers to complete a two-piece suit.
