Day 10 of the war on Lebanon

Yesterday, a strike landed just 200 meters from our University in Beirut, visible from our classroom. The humanitarian impact of the war continues to grow, with 750,000 people displaced, nearly a third of them children.

We are grateful that our team remains safe.

Despite the circumstances, we have transitioned our classes online and continue our work on human rights, conflict analysis, justice, and social movements with our colleagues and professors from across the region.

In the heart of conflict, we remain committed to our students and to the principles of human rights and international law.

Highlight of the week:

Discussion of the new book "A Critique of Civil Society and Its Concepts" by Towfic Shomar, National Director at the University of Jordan.

A timely conversation on civil society, bringing together a philosopher and two activists: Daniel Al Theb from Lebanon and Rana Al Sheikh Ali from Syria, both alumni of the ArMA programme.

When NGOs have become permanent substitutes for the state and as they are now being abandoned by donors mid-crisis, questioning the concept of civil society is no longer a strictly academic issue, but a vital social one too.

د. توفيق شومر هو أكاديمي وفيلسوف أردني، يعمل أستاذًا في قسم الفلسفة في الجامعة الأردنية، وله حضور بارز في الحقل الفكري والأكاديمي من خلال محاضراته ومساهماته في مجالات الفلسفة والفكر النقدي.

يتناول الكتاب مقاربة نقدية معمّقة لمفهوم المجتمع المدني، من خلال تحليل أدواره، بنيته، وحدود تأثيره في السياقات السياسية والاجتماعية المعاصرة، مع تسليط الضوء على التحديات النظرية والعملية المرتبطة به. ويعتمد الكاتب في طرحه على قراءة تحليلية تجمع بين الفكر النقدي والتجربة البحثية، ما يجعل الكتاب مساهمة فكرية مهمّة في الوقت الرّاهن.

At UNHCR's Beirut office, ArMA students present the preliminary findings from their research into the aspirations and capabilities for refugee return.

The results are based on interviews, surveys and focus groups that they organised last week in Central Bekaa and the eastern suburbs of Beirut under the supervision of Dr , head of the Mobility Rights Unit at USJ.

At UNHCR's Beirut office, ArMA students present the preliminary findings from their research into the aspirations and capabilities for refugee return.

Monitoring and Documenting International Crimes through Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT)

A three-day workshop led by Ahmed Al-Aidy, Al-Arma Program alumnus from Gaza, focusing on modern tools and practical skills for human rights documentation and media work.
