We’re not perfect parents.
We’re aware parents.
And that’s how cycles get broken.

Cooking together is a preferred activity for this family.
The child was faced with several activity choices, and ‘Cooking together’ won out many times. It was chosen over playing outside, dancing, and playing an instrument. Interestingly, ‘Hide and seek with Mom and Dad’ was the ultimate winner in the final choice, suggesting family connection is most important.
What activity is a must-do in your family? 🧑‍🍳

Allowing your child to be bored is crucial for their development.
Kids who are never bored struggle to sit still and focus. This constant need for stimulation is driven by a non-stop stream of dopamine. Removing this stimulation, like during learning or a boring activity, makes it impossible for them to concentrate. Constantly keeping them busy fries their dopamine receptors and nervous systems.
Let your child learn the art of doing nothing! 🤯🧘

Stop asking your kids, “How was school today?”
Kids feel emotionally overwhelmed after school and interpret the question as a monitoring trap, not support. Instead of feeling like they’re being monitored, try asking questions that spark curiosity and connection. Asking things like, “Did anything make you laugh today?” or “Can you tell me about something you’re reading?” are much more interesting for them.
These alternatives prevent kids from feeling overstimulated and foster genuine conversation. 🍎

One-year-olds watching TV and staying up late may face harmful developmental delays.
This professional was alarmed when a hairdresser mentioned his one-year-old niece wasn’t speaking, babbling, or saying common sounds like “mama” or “baba.” Further inquiry revealed the child was regularly staying up until 11 or 12 PM and watching TV constantly. Late bedtimes (7-8 PM is suggested) and screen time for infants are factors parents must be aware of.
If your child isn’t meeting speech milestones, seek an expert’s opinion. ⚠️😴

Avoid these harmful parenting practices when helping your child study.
Punishing a child for fidgeting or moving around is harmful. Forcing long study sessions without breaks is also definitely harmful. Expecting a child to sit perfectly still, or comparing them to siblings and classmates, are definite no-nos. Instead, try helpful strategies like allowing some snacks and water breaks, and removing distracting toys from the room. 💡
Prioritize understanding and support over strict discipline.

Replace “don’t” commands with positive alternatives to communicate better with your kids.
Just like telling someone not to think about a monkey makes them think about it, telling kids “don’t run” makes them focus on “running.” Instead, frame your instructions positively for immediate results. Try saying “walking feet, please” instead of “don’t run.” For noisy situations, “indoor voice” works better than “stop shouting.” 🤫
Use your talking voice instead of whining!

Engage in shared reading or interactive games for better learning outcomes.
There are several ways to support a child’s development, moving beyond passive activities. Shared activities like “watching cartoons with an adult” or “talking about a reading book” foster connection and comprehension. Games focusing on phonetics and sensory tracing offer hands-on learning. Even simple actions like “writing short picture captions” build essential literacy skills.
Visiting a library with a parent is a great way to instill a love for books! 📚✨

Stop just reading words and start interacting with your kids!
Dialogic reading significantly multiplies the experience of reading, leading to amazing brain development. Kids who are read to daily know 1.4 million more words by age five. Reading creates more white matter in the brain, which is responsible for language and complex thoughts. The magic happens when you ask your child questions like, “What do you think will happen next?” or “Who’s your favorite character?”
Make reading a conversation! 🧠📚
