In Collaboration with Stanford University (US), the American University of Beirut (LB) is thrilled to launch a first-of-its-kind initiative in the Middle East & North Africa: The AUB Stanford WiDS. This one-day technical conference provides an opportunity to hear about the latest data science research in different fields, learn how leading-edge companies are leveraging data science for success, an

d connect with potential mentors, collaborators, and others in the field. Date: Friday, February 3rd, 2017

More than just a conference, AUB Stanford WiDS is:
- A global event represented by AUB in the Arab MENA region.
- A collaboration with the Stanford Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering @ Stanford.
- At the cornerstone of academic and industry research and practice.
- An annual event taking place at AUB this year, Dubai next year, and different parts of the MENA region in the future. WHY DATA SCIENCE?
- In the last two years alone, the world has produced more data than in all of human history.
- Data Science is transforming all industries and revolutionizing the business mindset.
- Data Scientists derive actionable insights from large amount of data, see patterns and convert them into innovative products and services, deriving solutions to customer problems.
- Data Science enables business people in all sectors and across industries to develop innovative, value adding and sustainable activities. WHY AUB STANFORD WOMEN IN DATA SCIENCE? AUB-Stanford WiDS creates a platform for data scientists in the Arab Middle East to:
- Promote a higher representation of women in data science.
- Expose the latest data science research and practices in the Arab Middle East.
- Connect regional researchers and practitioners to pioneering global data science networks.
- Exchange ideas, encourage mentorship and interdisciplinary collaboration. SIGNIFICANCE OF WIDS AT AUB AND IN THE MIDDLE EAST:
- Data Science is still an untapped market in the MENA region.
- Data science is an interdisciplinary field transforming all industries, and is one of the hottest growing fields globally.
- AUB is well positioned to leverage its different schools in support of more women representation in Data science.
- Women in the region have strong quantitative and analytical skills but need further guidance and support to pursue careers in data science.
- AUB will be the first to address this subject in the Middle East region.
